I just purchased the Elite DSI from WMarine.   The woman helping me explained the difference between the HDI and DSI was one came with a transducer ( DSI ) and the HDI had several options for a transducer.

Now I just have to learn how to use it....  :smt005

I've sold 7 HDI units in the past 2 weeks and all came with the transducer. They were all elite 4 and 5's.

When the electronics in a fish finder bite the dust or it is stolen off a boat the transducer is still fine. Makes sense to be able to buy only the finder and not the transducer.

It always clearly states "no transducer" or which transducer is provided and whether with Lowrance it includes charts with the Gold option. Does take a little care in reading and thinking Oh What a Deal - Someone must have screwed up with the price.

I don't know about "clearly". On the side of the box, there is a checklist with the different options. However, there are pictures of a boat with a friggin' beam shooting off the bottom of it on the front of the box! I think it could certainly be a bit clearer.

The box is the same; included vs. not included.  It's the bar code or bar code sticker that differs.  If the boxes were faced on a shelf, you couldn;t tell one from the other w/o picking up the box to look at the barcode.  It's the retailers job to make sure they are clear with what the consumer is seeing and it is up to the consumer to know/understand what he/she is expecting to be receiving for their $$$.
