So, yesterday while jigging in fairly high winds by Gualala and occasional decent swell sets,  I hook up on what I think is a decent Ling which after hook set and rod pump, takes a run and stops.

I'm thinking it has holed up and am ready to wait it out. I am in full bendo, and ready to lighten up, loosen the bend and drag and wait.

But before I can make the move, a rolling swell comes through, quick elevator, tightening the rod further and it breaks right at the grip above the spinning reel top mount. I'm bummed!

It was an ML Trevala with 20# braid, I have had it for a couple years. I have had several Shimano rods and never had this happen - I always keep line weight within rod specs.

Despite this, I want to replace the rod with an identical model as I have liked and used it so much. Anyone else have this happen? Is it a flaw or just abuse? Advice?

Send the rod in. I have been fishing my Trevala S for a few years well beyond specifications, and it is fine.

Shimano website has a rod warranty form you print out, fill it out and mail it in.
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

I was at Guns Fishing and other Stuff in Vacaville last Thursday.  The staff was huddled around a piece of paper talking about Shimano.

I went over and asked what the what was going on.  They let me read the notice from Shimano......... as of 1 Aug 2014 the lifetime warranty and over the counter replacement program will end.  Going forward the warranty will be 1 year and you have to send the rod to Shimano for consideration of replacement.

I don't know if you can make a warranty claim today on a rod over 1 year old, but I'd try to get it replaced ASAP.

Might be good to break out the topic into a new thread about change in warranty. Some stuff floating around out there on the 'net about it too.  Yakhopper, can you spread any light on this?

I was at a seminar for salmon a while back at the local tackle shop ,the owner of the shop told everybody the same thing ,no longer going to be warranty like it has been.

Could it be on those that are purchase after August are not cover by the lifetime warranty? That would suck if they do that, I love Trevala.

Per Shimano;
"Dear valued Shimano Retailer,

Effective August 1, 2014 all shimano rods have a one year limited warranty. Limited lifetime warranties and the over the counter replacement program are discontinued. Rods currently at retail and in supply chain are excepted (but with some procedural changes that are explained in the FAQ attachment to this notification).
The purpose of the Shimano warranty is to provide anglers who buy our rods with protection against non conformities in material and manufacturing. When these problems occur, they almost always become evident within the first few uses. A one year limited warranty gives the consumer fair and sufficient coverage for non conformities.
We recognize this is a significant departure from our current policy, and we encourage you to read through the attached list of frequently asked questions. We believe that this is a positive change for the industry"

Although I don't believe it is in good business to change a policy after goods have been sold, I see the mfgr warranty too often abused by consumers feeling entitled to more than is stated.
We recieve approx 15 rods per day for warranty claims. The warranties cover defects in material and workmanship. 90% or more are simply abuse. The mfgrs have taken the hit at the price of lost revenue.
This also explains why (like insurance rated), the cost of a premium fishing rod has skyrocketed.
Hope this helps clarify some concerns.
