Yes I admit, I am beginning to feel the epidemic kicking me. Looks like I'm about have Salmonoids virus.

I know for a fact 25 to 30lbs are good.

Mono or floro?
Lenght from dodgers/flasher?
Lenght weight to Dodger/Flasher?
Lenght from Deep six?

Thanks

I would not go with less than 40lb test for your leader.  I lost 2 salmon this year when the leader broke when the fish was at the boat!  It was lower test leader that came with the RSK/FSK rigs.  I've now upgraded to 40 lb.

I like 20 pound Eagle Claw mooching slip rigs with size 2 and 3 hooks about 27" behind a Herring Dodger which is about 3' behind a double DS, and I run 25 to 30 pound mono all the way to the spool.

Leaders that come with terminal salmon gear (Apex, Brad's, RSK...etc.) are notorious for breakage.  I feel it's more about crappy line (you'll have to buy another lure...) than about the pounds test, FWIW.

Check leaders a lot - even a 30 or 40 pound leader will break if it's damaged, and even a 12 or 15 pound leader can land a big fat hog.

Fishing on a reef makes a big difference - at the Cove you'll have a hard time retrieving any gear at all if you run heavy leaders and snag, but off Eureka you aren't going to hook a rock, so go big.

The name of the game in salmon fishing is be diverse, make sure you maximize your time showing a good presentation, and increase your odds of hookups and landings however you can, because you'll need it!

I've trolled well over 800 miles for salmon since April of 2012 for 47 legal kings, several silvers and shakers, and a dozen or so lost at the boat - other hookups and brief fights not counted.  You NEED to maximize your odds.  It ain't rockfishin'...

For trolling, I'd use the 40lb mono.  For mooching, I use 25lb fluoro.  But I also use a 9ft whippy rod to compensate for quick bursts of energy when mooching. Try to keep your total leader length under 1-Rod length.  If its much longer than your rod, you might have trouble landing the fish.

Wow!  17 miles per fish!  No need to go to the gym!  Good perspective on the quality of the leader line vs. the weight.

I use 25# floro for my salmon leaders for trolling lures. 40# mono for bait rigs.
