What do you use for trolling at AR?

I use a sardine wrapped Maglips with the front hook taken off and the rear hook replaced with a 3 ball swivel and Siwash hook.

What's the purpose of replacing the hook?

The salmon spit trebles like nobodies business.
The siwash seem to have a cleaner hook set an stronger hold.
Unless you get a smaller jack. They just smash the hell outa it and seem to hook themselves.

What Matt said, plus fewer snags when you fish close to the bottom.

If Mattt posts a hookup come salmon season, I highly recommend you make it.  Matt is one of the AR gurus, and I always learn something about the AR when I fish with him.

Thanks brother! That's high praise coming from such a quality fisherman. Appreciate it.

Hey Matt,
Do you ever hit the American during this time of year for big stripers?  I've heard they are in there.

Hahahaha. There are stripers in the system. I got a few last week. I only catch release when they are up here doing their thing. Not as many big ones as there used to be. Still fun to catch.
Also believe it or not there are shad still in the river. Fresh ones.

I'd like to try striper fishing the American.. Besides fishing, it seems like it would just be fun to get out there on the water.. Do you have any tackle suggestions?

I haven't targeted them for almost a month. Heard today there was a female not spawned out caught up top.

If there is one there are many. And it makes sense, folks were marking huge schools of fish last month in the delta, weren't salmon, coulda been stripes... Most likely a late run of shad due to the late increase in flows.  The flows were around 500 cfs a while ago and increased to around 2000cfs to fulfill some water contracts I'm sure. The increase in flows was supposed to help with the delta water being too salty or some other crap. It's definitely not to make room in the reservoirs up here for snow melt or rain water. We have neither.

Anyways, the increase in flows mighta brought some late run shad. All a guess on my part. Like I said I haven't targeted them. When I paddled the river from Sailor to Watt on July 11th I didn't see any. Not did I see any of the big stripers I normally see in their usual spots. But did find some schoolie stripers an a few toads in some new places.

Tony, I'd say it's spotty at best. Better bet to target stripes and maybe a port trip. Have t been there in a few months. About due for the paddle.
