I Drove down the Sacramento River from Sacramento to Rio Vista today. Spotty amount of boats till Walnut grove to Rio Vista with alot of boats( including a kayak) working the " Vera's Resort" area. Stopped and talked to Vera. They are picking up nice Kings, definite improvement today per " Vera ". With the weather changing  and the water temp dropping, looks like this is about to bust open...Danglin

I am itching to get out there.  It may not be wide open yet, but it's time to start trying.

If only I wasn't booked with WAF obligations this weekend   :spank.  I am already planning the 8th, the only question is which part of the river system?

Ya, thats the place. they will charge ya 10 bucks to launch, but there is not much access to the Sac. Maybe Alfredo has more info on that.

As far as what to use, it's bizzare. Around Vera's above Rio Vista, they use wiggle warts, pink and blue, I belive. The " Hot "
ticket has been the the " Silvertron " sold @ Vera's for the low, low price of $7.50. Vibrix Blue Fox in Blue or Pink #5 or #6, Agilia Spinner#5,  Monte Spinner#5 or #6, Flat fish M2,

As you get farther up the river trolling/ or back trolling a Kwik Fish in Chrome/Chartruse with a Sardine wrap ( Fillet attached to the underside of lure with rubberband)
Back trolling in a kayak can be tricky.  You need to find a hole, anchor above it ( you will need a heavy anchor with a quick release, see the Sturgeon artical on the NCKA home page for quick release set up)

Then lower lure to bottom towards hole, I've seen spreaders used with 10" leader and 1oz to 3oz weight, the lure side has approx 30" leader. Same with trolling, being on the bottom is better.

As you get even closer to Sacramento the Popular Gib's Minnow in Chrome/red/blue. Mooching is the technique and is very popular @ the Mouth of the American. Hook regs change @ the HWY 50 underpass, NO BARBS I believe, I'll be checking for changes

Any of these techniques/lures will most likley work presented right and a little luck.

I am working on a West Marine King Salmon Toruney right now, but I 'm not sure it's going to happen , keep ya posted

The Sacramento River is strong and cold...Be Safe.....Danglin :smt003

Danglin,
Just called the resort and If one was to park their RV there the first day is $5 buck then $2 any preceding day to launch. According to them their have been Salmon caught in the area http://vieiras95641.tripod.com/id7.html although this maybe a marketing PLO. How active does this area get when they do start running? In other words is it worth me bringing my RV to set up there (Vieira's Resort)  for a weekend of fishing. Or anyother type of RV accommodations for the self contained unit? (small 24' type A Winnabago towing a Yak)
So those of you in the know please chime in. Actually it would be interesting just to here about other type of facilities which would accommodate a group of us.

What I witnessed last year was a zoo. This is the nearest spot from the Bay Area that crowds them in. And Vera is a little stressed about this time, so I wouldn't expect alot of customer service or information in any detail. As far as I know, there is not much.  Another rv park called " Kroqet" near walnut grove, could be another option, just up the road a bit from Vera's. There are other launch points in Walnut Grove, Clarksberg (no fee, on the west side of the river), and Garcia Bend, South Sac.

Discovery Park becomes quite a scene too, but, the fish tend to stack up there, so it is a little easier to fish by kayak. It also has lots of room to hang out, don't know about camping. and being this is a area I cover when I work the engine, I don't know if I'd want to camp there. Lets just say our ma-do is " We make house calls to the Homeless " :chug  I will be finding out more,  and any info others have please chime in....Danglin

When the Big boys get farther up the American River, the boat speed becomes 5mph, putting in around Hazel ave is a good place but, there are lots of places to put in when it comes to the American....There are alot of boats on the Sacramento River but it's not really a problem,  there are of course a couple Jackasses :smt013. The boats usually all stack up anchored or trolling, everybody is moving slow and seem to get a kick out of seeing a fishingkayak. The biggest thing is working against the sac river fulltime. It's really easy @ Discovery Park when you can just drift over the American mouth with a Gibs minnow. It's still a little early, but you can easily tell when it's on...Boats everywhere...Danglin

If you launch at Vieira's, is it possible to fish for salmon and then paddle back to the place where you launched? Or do you have to land downstream somewhere and use two cars?

As Clint Eastwood says " A man has to know his limitations...

No, really, I've "peddaled" ( Outback)  up and down the Sac, I've also seen Paddlers out there, but, when it comes to the Sac River, there are big boats out there, and it can be dangerous. But mostly the boats are packed up, anchored or trolling slow.

Test out how well your able to paddle up stream before your swept to San Pablo Bay.

The American is more suited to Kayak needs with plenty of access points and some slow moving water, but again, there are Mutants anywhere you go :rambo:....Danglin
