Went diving this morning.  South of town off some state land trail.  Had to use a rope to get down a little rock.  The visibility was good in some areas and bad in others.  I made a makeshift camera holder for my speargun and wanted to see how it works.  I still haven't shot a lingcod yet and keep seeing small ones.  This video compiles a bunch of small clips into one.  I passed on a bunch of smaller fish and finally saw something worth shooting.  I saw a 23" Cabazon and he tried to evade me.  The chase was on and I was able to catch up to him right as I got the camera turned back on and he was playing hide and seek in the kelp.  My knife is a dull tip, so I tried to push the spear into the fishes head but it was to hard.  The shot was not an instant kill and he was pissed off.  I guess I need to invest in a little knife so I can finish them off before removing the spear shaft.

Good practice for when I get my monster ling.

If you don't care about vis and scenery, just forward to the end of the video for the kill shot.

Amazed at sound clarity when you shot the fish. Not a GoPro? On my GoPro, sound is very muffled when I shoot video with it in the underwater housing.

I think we did hit the same spot. Did u need a little rope. I have been mostly shore diving.  Good cardio. I have been swimming out to where others take their kayaks. Just can't move cove to cove real easy. It is a new weight loss program for me.   Preparing for gs9's fun hike. I didn't take any abs, but should have at least grabbed one. Wife just told me we did not have any in freezer.  Well I can find some before Tuesday (July furlough) .  I do like finding new spots.   They each have their own wonder based on wind and waves.

Not a go pro.  Its a canon d20 I think. They have newer ones with more megapixels but this was a father's day gift and it takes good photos. I figured out how to make it work for video.  I am afraid of damaging the camera when I hang the gun from my float line.  Other than that I can take some great pictures if I try. I just get caught up in the hunt, I haven't really tried to get good shots yet.

Thanks for sharing and congrats on the cabbie.

You might want to dive down and look under ledges, inside cracks and under boulders. There is usually a lot of fish holding up in those area.

I do some looking. My flashlight is supposed to be okay, but I must be getting old because I can't see anything with it.  I don't want to take to many chances. My breath time is getting better so I expect to be able to spend more time looking soon and not having to come up as soon as I start getting into the explorer part of the hunt.

One nice fish is still better than zero fish.  Sorta like the saying a bad day on the water is better than the best day at work.

Are those little orange fish shortbellys?
Naoaki?
Our fish were spitting them up at Van Damme.

I am not really sure about the orange ones. Some of the other small ones were baby rocks. They were so cute.  Going to grow and be dinner.  The Cabazon I got were filled with little rock/dungenous crabs from 1-3 inches.  Did not see any fish in his belly.
