I finally managed to clear my schedule and do some fishing down here in L.A. this morning in LA Harbor at Cabrillo Beach.

Here's the short version:  Zero (that's no) halibut   :smt010 , 5 sand bass (one over 14"), one sculpin (scorpion fish), one calico bass (about 12"), and two lizards, one which was oddly mangled.

All fish were released though I could have kept the larger sand bass and the sculpin.

When I got to the ramp this morning at 6:30 I discovered that the terminal wiring connector for my groovy new FF battery had come off … OK -- no FF today.  Then I discovered my extra rod holders are all messed up -- ok this will be a one-rod day, so I decide I will throw plastic all day.  (And this surprises anyone?)      I had called the bait receiver the night before and all they had today was pinhead (small) anchovies.

There was a slight breeze from the south east -- I don't think I've ever dealt with that the entire time I've fished here. I started fishing at the boat ramp, worked my way to the channel at the mouth of the marina, then followed the channel out to the light house, then sailed/drifted back.

First short sand bass

Second short sand bass

I met Alan OTW today -- GREAT TO MEET you and nice job!
-- and I see you did better than I did.   WTG!!

Then I hooked a larger sand bass -- tugged so hard I decided to use the net.

OK -- the one was legal -- but I released it after I measured and photographed it

Here's the sculpin -- I maybe should've kept this one.

Then I got a 12" calico bass

Then I got this really ODDLY injured lizard fish -- something took a chomp out of him!

Then another little sand bass

When I got to the lighthouse I decided to drift/sail back.

I didn't catch any more fish -- but I had a few bites that seemed like halibut -- but who knows?

By the time I got back to the ramp the wind shifted more out of the south and by the time I got home at 1:45 pm it was doing it's normal afternoon gale from the west.  I caught all the fish along the kelp line between the pylons tracking the channel.

So I didn't use bait -- I did use plastic - and I think the outcome is fairly predictable here.

Tomorrow I'm going to fix my FF battery connectors and try to come up with a functioning system to bring 3 rods. I think Im going to loose the milk crate because I have so little deck space in the little Hobie Mirage Sport.   Once I get the rod holders installed I will spend some time making bait -- that's really the ticket for the CA halibut here.

Oh -- and I had a BLAST -- !!!  There was lots of action, even though the fish were mostly small.   :smt044

That's my report and I'm sticking to it.

Great report looks like you had a really good day, I kept and ate some variety of sculpin once, yuk.  Of course a cabbie is a sculpin too I think, :smt001.

Thanks for sharing

I didn't know lizard fish got that big.

The scorpion fish (sculpin) that we get down south is quite tasty.  :smt004
