The wife's family is in town and they wanted to do the 17 mile drive today. "Unfortunately" there wasn't room for all of us in one car. So, I offered to make the "sacrifice" of driving myself to Monterey and meeting them later in the day. Of course, I was packing my kayak and my day started real early...

On the water before 6:00am, launched from MBK and headed to the right. It was a bit choppy and cold, and the direction of the wind made things fairly uncomfortable. Basically done by 9:00, but hung out in front of MBK until 10:00 to see if the wind might go down (it didn't). It was pretty slow---just a few rockfish and a couple of lings. But the super-agressive ling in this video made my day:

Very Nice! Do you like those foam covers for your poles vs a leash? What are the pros and cons. Where do you get the foam also?

I've tried both, and I much prefer the pool noodles. But these are fairly modest-priced rod/reels---for a more expensive setup, I'd want to leash it. One disadvantage of these noodles is that the line hits them when casting. I mostly troll, so that doesn't matter to me. The thing I don't like about the leash is that the leash gets in the way.

Do a search here for "pool noodles" and you'll find a bazillion uses for them when kayak fishing. I usually buy them at Big 5, but they're also available at Target and lots of other places. They come in 2 standard sizes---for rods you want the skinny ones (about 3" diameter).
