Look up "nail knot". One of the guys at Mel Cotton's showed me that, it works for me.

I think for salmon the DFG regs disallow the sliding knot?
https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=80195&inline=true

Horse Mountain to Point Conception: When fishing with bait and angling by any means other than TROLLING, no more than two single-point, single-shank barbless circle hooks2 shall be used. The distance between the two hooks must not exceed 5 inches when measured from the top of the eye of the top hook to the inner base of the curve of the lower hook and both hooks must be permanently tied in place (hard tied).

Though I guess it does imply it's ok when trolling.  But I wonder how easy it is to demonstrate you were trolling on a yak.

Yes you can, if you are trolling. Only circle hooks, when required, must be hard tied.

Can you cite that for me please?
Not doubting you, just want to know where it reads that.
Thanks.

The post never said it was to be used for salmon.

From page 35 of the Ocean Sport Fishing Regulations:

https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=77722&inline=true

27.80. SALMON.
(a) Methods of take:
(2) Barbless Hooks. No more than two (2) single point, single shank barbless hooks shall be
used in the ocean north of Point Conception (34° 27’00” N. lat.) when salmon fishing or fishing from
any boat or floating device with salmon on board.
(3) Other Hook Restrictions. When fishing with bait in the ocean between Horse Mountain
(40°05’00” N. lat.) and Point Conception, if angling by any means other than trolling, then no more
than two (2) single point, single shank, barbless circle hooks shall be used. The distance between
the two hooks must not exceed five inches when measured from the top of the eye of the top hook
to the inner base of the curve of the lower hook, and both hooks must be permanently tied in place
(hard tied)
. A circle hook is defined as a hook with a generally circular shape, and a point which turns
inwards, pointing directly to the shank at a 90 degree angle. Trolling is defined as angling from a
boat or floating device that is making way by means of a source of power, other than drifting by
means of the prevailing water current or weather conditions. See Section 28.65(g).

I don't understand why the same topic of hooks get hashed and rehashed.  You can use a sliding knot when trolling, but personally I don't use them cause they can break from the friction of the sliding hook.  Strait tied is the best.  Ask oldtimers and they will say the same thing.

Because there are a jillion specific rules and constraints pertaining to everything we do. Add that to the bajillion rules and constraints with a job that have to be remembered and followed to the "T" and sometimes things get lost in the mix.
