trolling 101

Never tried tried trolling before and plan on giving it a shot here soon. Going to try and troll for halibut/striper. What setup you guys prefer when trolling?
Can crankbaits be used (luckycraft minnow)on say a leader off 3 way swivel?
I know live baits work best but what other baits/lures work well?
How far off bottom usually?

Halis will want it on or very close to the bottom.

I trolled up a Sarcastic Fringe head that only lives in shells ON the bottom and attacks when pissed off, a Nudibranch, and a Halibut last week. I was definatly on the bottom.
