The area from opal cliffs to seacliff beach is kinda like an anomoly due to the warm water that gets trapped inside there.
Here's another exotic...from 2010 in 25fow off New Brighton on live sardine, during the striper bite.

Is that really an exotic?  I saw one in monterey bay aquarium this weekend so I would have guessed we're in their historical range.

You know what, I'm probably wrong on this one, depending on how we define "exotic".  The aquarium also had seniorita and a garibaldi which are pretty rare for up here.

Exotics are like Rare. It can be a function of time also, aside from locality.

IMO, the entire south facing hook of Monterey Bay that makes up Santa Cruz/Cap has tons of resident SoCal species, from señoritas to opaleye to calicos, etc.

Senoritas are definitely not rare.  Due to size of fish/mouth/habits they're not part of normal fishing bycatch, but they are very common up here.   :-)
However you're right about the garibaldi; I've never seen or heard of of those orange goldfish being found up here.

Maybe you young ones don't remember this, but when we had a real warm el nino year some lucky dude caught a marlin off a party boat. I think that goes way back but somewhere in this old head of mine I remember it

I remember a sailfish being caught in the bay area somewhere approximately 35 years ago

I would disagree with that statement. No offense, but......

No offense taken. But what makes you say that? These fish occupy a unique habitat–and behave–such that I would not expect an angler to really ever encounter them. Maybe "tons" was not entirely accurate, but there are significant populations of SoCal species, from what I've seen

Plenty of opies in the background, not to mention the ones that never leave their crack systems. I see them regularly:

Sheep crab are predominantly a SoCal species of crustacean:

No film on it, but señoritas are common place. I see more calicos on the north side of the bay than I do in Monterey/Carmel proper. I've seen swell sharks, as well, but usually in cracks so tight that I can barely fit my own head in, let alone a camera.

Wasn't it like 3-5 years ago that a guy caught a striped marlin under or near the GG bridge?
