So for those that have registered your AI's, on the DMV form, did you select:

Vessel Type:  "S -Sailboat,"  and NOT  "K - Kayak/Canoe"

Propulsion:  "S - Sail Only,"   or did you select  "X - Other"

Fuel:  "X - Other"

And in "Section 8 - Special Use of CF Numbers," did you check the "Other" box and submit a statement as to why you needed a CF # or did you just skip this section?

I'm trying to have this go as smoothly as possible without having the form returned.  Thanks

I think the crowd is mixed 50/50 on register vs. not register.

Remember this .. a boat, once registered must ALWAYS be registered.  They don;t make a "non-op" for boats.  Only way to drop registration is to claim it as destroyed.  If you go to sell it & the NEW owner wants too register again, they are in for a battle (that I doubt can be won vs. DMV).

I'm selling off my fleet of boats because the registration rates are almost double with the Mussel inspection sticker and it just isn't worth it any longer.

If the sail is your primary propulsion .... do you need to register, well .....  Electric/gas motor on it .... so you need to register, well......

   Youre call on this one.

To answer your direct question of "how" to register .... I don't have a CLUE on that one.

Theoretically, with the sail you need to register.

I did:
K
X
X
and skipped

I brought a picture of the dang thing to explain. Lady was very helpful...

Yeah, I'm torn because I think I'm going to split my time using the sail and as a kayak w/ one ama.

I'll give doing the right thing a shot and see what happens as I attempt to register it as a Kayak.

That's the stance I am with too.  It's a kayak first and foremost, the sail is just an aide IMHO

I registered mine, no regrets.  I can live with $20 a year fee.  Cheaper than a ticket.

Wind Toys registered mine when I bought it, and now I've misplaced the stickers... Gotta go to the DMV and see what they say... this should be fun.

Just giving an update... registered it.

It took three friggin' months because they returned my paperwork and asked me to resubmit it with the use tax.  Well, since I already decided to "do the right thing," I wrote a check.

Then, a month later, they return my paperwork and tell me to include a rubbing of the hull ID.  I took a rubbing right on the DMV paperwork and included a photo of the HID.  They couldn't request this the first time?!?

The idiocy of the DMV is mindblowing!  They even sent me the mussel stickers even though my paperwork indicated my salt water exemption.

Anyway, 3 month later and I can finally use my sail worryfree...  :smt013

When I registered mine they kept sending the paperwork back because I wouldn't check the box saying I had a spark arrestor installed.

They really are clueless
Where did he go george

I registered my original P15 so I could enter the Superbowl Sturgeon Derby.
Rules stated you needed a CF#.
When I entered the tourney they had never seen anyone from a kayak fish for sturgeon, much less enter the tourney with a kayak and told me I did not need a CF# to enter since it wasn't a boat.
From then on I simply ignored DMVs renewal notices. Never had a problem.

Don't forget the property tax on a $4K  boat plus property tax on the sales tax.  forever.  $20 boat fee plus $40 property tax.
