Very excited to be in this forum.  I have been a shore fisherman ever since I was 12 years old and have only ventured out onto the water when I was invited to go on someone else's boat.  I live in Sacramento and have fished local waters most of my fishing life but I really want to venture out into some saltwater on a kayak.

I have been looking into kayak fishing for over a year now and am about ready to pull the trigger.  There are just so many options out there!  Whenever I think I like one kayak, another catches my attention and I get stuck in this loop of indecisiveness!  Anywho... happy to be here!!!

Welcome!  I had the same reasons for joining, "there's gotta be a better way..."  I recommend going to an event and demoing a bunch of kayaks. It'll really help you narrow your choices.  See ya out there

Consider taking an into to kayaking class, especially if an SOT class is offered. You'll learn a lot in a short time and be a better, safer paddler.

You should see if theres any places you could rent a yak and go out on the ocean.fishing from a boat and a small piece of plastic is very different. Night and day almost.maybe some of these very nice and very experience saltys could take you out and try it out first.my friend thought the same thing and bought a yak did the salt he didn't like it did the delta he also didn't like it.just my .02
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

+ 1

Invest in an intro course to kayaking.

If you want to use a sit-on-top kayak for coastal trips, this class is a great investment towards making your adventures safe and enjoyable This class combines the Intro to Kayaks and Surf Zone for a comprehesive and intensive fun day. Includes wetsuit, sit-on-top single kayak and all gear. Instructors are ACA trained. A minimum 2 people are required for the class, or available by private instruction.

Offered every Sunday 9:30 to 5:00

You will also be able to demo their yaks in the process. I believe they offer an NCKA discount as well.

I strongly recommend a course of this type. Always remember safety first. You want to feel safe and comfortable in the water before you start fishing from a yak.

I feel the same way, opens up to more fishing possibilities when your'e on the water , hiking up and down cliffs gets tiring. Waiting for my 1st cuda 14, been researching/procrastinating for awhile. Hopefully I'll be rigged up before the salmon start running thick.

There is also California Canoe & Kayak in Rancho Cordova they are a local shop and will always be there to support your purchase.

They will be hosting Paddlefest on June 21 and you will be able to demo hobie, FeelFree, Jackson, & more. There will also be a intro to kayak fishing seminar that morning.

Thanks for all of the great replies.  Since my original post I have had the opportunity to paddle several kayaks.  The people at Headwaters have been amazing.  Very knowledgeable and friendly staff.  After speaking with several people and paddling several boats, I bought my first kayak.  I bought a Feelfree Moken 12.5.  Really liked how it paddled compared to the other boats I tried which included the Old Town Predator and the Wilderness System Ride 135.  Now I am just jonesing to get it rigged like I want and go fishing.  REALLY want to get some Salmon in it.
