I lost both of my fishing rods yesterday. They both broke in half! One of them even comes in 4 pieces, and it broke right before the coupling! So I have no fishing rods :smt013

Not sure how. The 4 piece one was really old so I can maybe see why. But the other one was brand new, less than a month old. Jeez. Not a good day.

That's a major bummer !

I've had the same thing happen when using and older rod myself. I went to set the hook on a fish and it too broke just below the coupling. Missed the fish too - double whammy !  :smt013

But the new one ? Wow, that's really strange. How did it break exactly ?

Don't tell me the new one was an Okuma Baidarka 7'6"...  They all seem to break!

Hang in there - I'll bet you catch something great on your new rod.   :smt001

That's what I had. I don't know about warranty yet, I'm packing it up to send it back. We'll find out if Cabelas weasels their way out of it!

It broke halfway through, my line got snagged on some weeds. I yanked it back, not really hard, just a good jerk. I caught fish on this rod before and I know it's been hit much harder. It just snapped clean in two at the middle.

I'm more annoyed at it having happened yesterday than anything else - I planned to fish today. It can break today, at least it'd give me 5 days to grab a new one!  :smt044

Talked to Cabelas and looked into shipping costs. $45 to ship the fishing rod. What a joke. They would not provide me with any other options. Won't be shopping there anymore. Now that I've found some good local places I will be doing that from now on.

Not to knock the retail brands but in my experience they're not as good as the name brand products.in the beginning ive bought cabelas and bass pro rods and reels. They all seem to fall short.ive even bought the higher end cabelas stuff but still fell short. (Just my own personal opinions) spend a little more and buy a shimano or other more popular brands.with the limited warranty at least you can get a new rod when they break.do your research cause not all the rods in there lineup carrys the limited lifetime warranty. Just my .02 cents
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

That sucks.. But, it happens.

I had a Lamiglas snap clean in 2 on a cast, half the tip section went out 20 yards. The shipping out of Fishermans Warehouse was $15.00 or trade instore for like kind.

That doesn't sound right to me.  I've sent cabelas rods back and the cost nowhere near $45 to ship to them.  Most rod companies also allow you to cut the rod in half before shipping back if it is broken.

How did you ship the rods cheaply?

I asked if I could cut the rod down, they said definitely not and if I did that, the warranty would be void.

I'll try calling the rod company.

I think its normally <$15 to ship a 7' or shorter fishing rod through USPS priority mail.  I usually just get some sort of rod tube and ship em that way.  I prefer to ship my rods than take them on planes.  But the question is whether the rod is worth $15 to you.... Truthfully any rod that is broken should be allowed to be cut in half since they're not repairing them, they're replacing them.  You should push them harder, file a BBB or other complaint or even go to your credit card company to dispute if they're not doing their job as a retailer.

But from your post, the rod broke right in half, so it shouldn't be that expensive to ship it if you bring it to the post office.

And if you still have the cabelas invoice and rod tube, you should be able to ship everything back to them.  They usually have return labels and list a cost to returning it on the label.

I'd just return it and include a letter that they should refund you for everything, including the return shipping cost since it broke.  After all they do provide a 90 day satisfaction guarantee:

I find Cabela's customer service to be a joke in general but they bend when you push them.

I feel your pain, I have broken 2 fly rods in the last couple months after going several years without breaking one. One was brand new but I still have to pay "handling fee" of $60, total BS.

I know people that have had good experiences with Cabela's warranty on fly rods. Sounds like maybe they have changed something.

The tip broke on my Baidarka too, now I have a 7'4" Baidarka, still fishes great...
