Why are outbacks so expensive?

For the same reasons divorces are so  expensive.
Because they're worth it!  :smt044

Buying a Hobie is no difference than buying a car. YOU PAY FOR THE UP GRADES. Just smart business. But when you up grade your wheels they charge you and keep the old wheels.

Now that I remember Adventure Sports gave me 150 in free shit,  got the seat pad at the turbo fins for the original price.  Although know what your buying first before going to AS,  they are to busy for everyone.......horrible salesmanship and horrible people skills.

Hi Wilderness Medic,
I bought my Hobie from Austin Kayak last August and saved a shitload of $$$. At that time there was free shipping and no sales tax.

I just checked out the 2014 Outback at ACK and it will cost you $2158.00 which includes $159 for shipping.

Why not buy a Revo 13 for $2008.00 which includes the $159 for shipping.

When my Hobie was shipped it was wrapped really well and I did not have any kind of damages. Also the Hobie warranty is for 1 year and you can take it to any Hobie dealer if something goes wrong.

I don't think that you will find it cheaper anywhere else.

Take Care,

Da Bruddah

Thanks to danglin I got out the door for less than $1,900.00 with taxes and upgrades. Took it out of ocean cove over the weekend. This thing hauls ass! Sooo much better than my old one. Hobie came far with fixing annoying things and general improvements.

They are pricy, but there's just no substitute for hands-free fishing, especially if you like to troll for hours on end.

Save up and get one. You'll be glad you did...

I bought my '13 outback last june for $1700 out the door (cash) with turbo paddles and sailing rudder.  It was a demo, but it looked brand new.  It has been some of the best money I have ever spent and everytime I take it out I am greatful for the mirage drive and rudder.  If I didnt live so close to the salmon action I would probably have gotten a revo.  For lakes and rivers I would think the revo might be the ticket.  But when it gets a little rough, the outback shines.
'13 outback.

You should be able to find a decent-condition used Outback for ~1200 to 1400.

I looked on Craigslist for the past two weeks and could only find one person selling a Revo 13 and no one selling a PA or Outback in the entire state. These boats are sold in very small numbers. In the Monterey Bay area I have only seen one couple with a pair of the Hobie boats in the past 17 years that these boats have been selling in California.

The base Outook boat can be purchased for $1999 plus shipping or sale tax and a comparable kayak like the Trident 13 sells for $1099 or a difference of $900. Hobie is charging what the market will bear for as long as they have the exclusive patent to their drive system. A Ocean Kayak Torque with the special Minn-Kota trolling motor sells for only $100 more than an Outback to give another perspective on pricing.

What is crazier to me is the price of the Propel boat with its propeller drive that costs $2199as or $200 more than a Hobie Outback and $300 more than the Revolution 13 boat.

My first year of marriage resulted in a 10% higher tax bill and that was before the loss of depreciation deductions - thank you very much Governor Reagan.

Fortunately the materials cost of the plastic is a very small part of the value pricing used by Hobie so even with the cost of a barrel of oil going up 400% since 2001 it has had relatively little any impact on the price of kayaks, Hobie's included.

I was very pleasantly surprised by how cheap all the Hobie accessories are compared to anything else on the market. For other manufacturer's accessories I get gouged royally and that includes companies like Cannon, Minn-Kota and Hummingbird (where a replacement transducer costs nearly as much as a new finder kit with a transducer). The Hobie stuff is a lot more reasonably priced than the aftermarket gear from YakAttack! and many other companies.
