Why are they so much? Is it really just because of the pedals an then having the patent? I thought all kayaks were as expensive. At $2,500+ I could get a decent or good kayak for 1/3 of that price.  I really want to buy a new one but looking at the prices I could actually get a different one now as opposed to saving for months.

Yeah, the first $700-1000 of the price is the Mirage Drive.  All Hobies are expensive but they do carry a high resale value.

you gotta pay to play with Hobies.

if you get a rudder kayak they cost around 1200/1300 and then add the mirage drive that's another 500-600

so it's a pretty decent deal if you think about it

There's a lot to be said for the pedal kayaks advantages!  If you ever fish in big winds or currents with a pedal kayak and then try to do it from a paddle yak you'll understand why so many people opt for the pedal systems.  I have a Hobie Pro Angler 14 and fish from it primarily.  There are times when I take out one of my three Louisiana pirogues just because of portages, depth restrictions, or whatever and it never fails that I find myself wishing I was pedaling once the wind kicks up!!

Don't forget that Hobie throws in a paddle and seat for that steep price tag!   :smt044

I've never used a paddle yak. Better stick with peddles I guess. Hate to buy a paddle only and regret it n

Most kayaks price are based on demand, re-sale value, and what the market will bear.

You should be able to find a decent-condition used Outback for ~1200 to 1400.

Then you get spoiled with the matching trailer for the AI like I did. :smt003  Just tacks on another $1k (used) to the price tag. :smt009
