There are even rattlesnakes in Santa Cruz!  buddy of mine fishing for bass in a farm pond right next to 4-mile beach found one.

I saw the pictures=it really happened!  Just this spring.

One thing Ive noticed about Rattlers here in CA, they are the quietest ones Ive seen, sometimes they dont even rattle, way more prone to escape rapidly, all the other ones Ive encountered, Timber, Easter Diamondback, Canebrake, and Pigmies all stand their ground and go freaking nuts with the rattle as soon as the see you. You can hear a big Diamondback from 100 feet away. Little Pigmies in FL are quiet but they are a foot long at tops but they still go crazy with the rattle. So YES, watch your step because they dont sound a warning all the time. I love snakes.

Never really sited in the basin, people say they cant make it over the pass, but it seems this would be the year for them to be in the basin if they were coming...

Just watch where you step. Rattlesnakes are actually kind of rare and hard to encounter, unless you're near a den or hotspot I wouldn't be worried.
This is not good information. Rattle snakes are not rare and they are easy to encounter. But can be avoided if you are careful and aware of them. Not meaning to insult you but the best part of your advice is "Just watch your step."

Really? Why's that? Maybe I should have added more rare than most people think.  Just because you had a Woodhaile around your house that always had a bunch or newly certain spot you could go and hear a bunch buzz you not mean that they are common.

I've traveled countless miles on foot field herping these creatures. Several years capturing and raisin them. Did you not read the second line? Unless you are near a den, "hot spot" People freak out and are afraid to go out into nature expecting to see a rattlesnake every 5 feet. Just be cognizant of where you step and it shouldn't be a problem. Ask your course if there are known dens around. They will know, and if there are should be able to tell you where they are.

I see them ALL the time at my fishing spot.
Almost jumped on one, stepped over one, almost swam with one, came close to grabbing one reaching around a rock. many more encounters than I have time to list.
Luckily, never bitten.

The foothills are littered with dens, your fishing spot must be very close to one. Rattlesnakes do not venture far from them.

Dude in one quote you say they are kind of rare and in an other of your quote's the foothills are littered with dens. Make up your mind. But it seams most of the reply's on this subject the people have encountered rattlesnakes.

WM:  I am still  trying to visualize you out there "herping" rattlesnakes.....is that like Twerking?   Isn't that dangerous?

Ha ha no, I know you are the real deal just couldn't resist.  I'm a snaky guy too, but only have seen rattlesnakes maybe 3 times in my life.

You seem to be having trouble understanding this. How can I reword it....

Yes, there are hotspots. Dens.  Places with groups of rattlesnakes. These hotspots are not that common. But in the Sierra Nevada foothills they are more prevalent. Dens are closer together. But still not that close. You may go somewhere and find a rocky outcropping and hear 15 buzz you. A den my hen you can go miles and miles without a single one. Make more sense? If his good course has a den or a danger area, they should be well aware of its location.

It mostly involves Valtrex and a lot of elbow grease LOL.

Yes. Even intentionally looking for them can prove frustrating and difficult. Most of the time it's easier to let others find them. Such as a home or business that had a problem den. Arizona has been the most irritating. I have road hunted several hundred miles of back roads,'hiked dozens of miles with no luck. Found a C. Scutulatus shed skin and missed a C cerastes going acrossed a road. That's the closest I've gotten there.

Ever try to deworm a rattlesnake? Haha....

Uuhhh... does all the sacramento and the valley count as a hotspot? That is a completely serious question because I come across rattlers quite regularly here especially this time of year. Seen 4 in the past week, mostly small. One even just drifted past me when I was anchored in the river.  They are all over. If your doing your research around here, hit me up, I'll put you on a few.

I used to be cool with rattlers. I've encountered many and never had a problem. But my mom got hit by one a few years ago and nearly died! She was in the ER for a week. It got her on the hand (through leather work glove) while she was gardening on the side of the house at 9am, in shingle springs in June. Their acreage is pretty snaky...dogs have been hit 3x. Now I gladly kill any rattler I encounter. With zero remorse.

What do you mean all of SSV? Rattlesnakes do not go far from dens and usually die if relocated more than a mile or two.  How far of an area are you encountering them a lot in? Where at? You've found them drifting last your yak? :0 That's crazy. Is this somewhere cut through an urban area? Feel free to message me.

Greater sac area, foothills, all of the valley, over to Bay Area. Urban areas and otherwise but it seems if it's surrounded by an urban area I'll see more. Most of the time within 100 ft of a year round water source. Very rarely get rattled at though, most of the time their silent until I get close and pin em, even then, usually they'll just hiss. Just because you don't see or hear them doesn't mean they are there, I assume that almost any body of water in those areas has rattlesnakes, and have had plenty of encounters to assure myself of that.

Let me know if you'd like to know specific locations where I've seen a lot, their mostly fishing spots I don't want to announce so I'll pm them to you if you want.

And yes,a small one floated by about 6ft to my left, lots of sticks and stuff floating by so I had to double take before I realized what it was. That got my heart going. Ya watch out for floating rattlers on the American. I have also seen a large one drop out of a tree sticking out of the water at folsom lake and swim to shore.
