Just a thought, but if you went to a big fish format (halibut, ling and salmon) you would eliminate fish ID problems totally. Zero rare or endangered rockies would die in the tourney.
So I'm packing my bags for the Misty Mountains, where the spirits go...........

Maybe make a quiz sheet on the waiver lingcod length limit quantity of take. 22"/2

What fish cant be kept?

How long must a greenling be.

I find it very annouying when people target animals they dont know the regulation to. That to me is intent to poach. Youre ignorance wont be takin into consideration when youre in court.

That is why my measure board has the fish name, length, and when they are in season marked on it.  And when I go out, what few times I have, I take a color fishing reg with the fish pictures on it to make sure I commit no crime.  Last thing I want to do is pay the government more money for not knowing the rules.
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

Something else I thought about .....

Now, I don't want to come down on anyone & ruin the good times....BUT....these events take an enormous amount of work, and a fair amount of money as well....

So I'm kind of rubbed the wrong way by seeing folks not pay the registration fee and then utilize the group perks. And I know that there will always be exceptions and I'm all for fewer rules believe me...Flexibility is key to survival......and Eric was very genorous to include the GS8.20....I just see potential for this to be an issue down the line. I don't know if this year's event had more of this happen or not. But with a mention of increased entry fees to cover say, more bathroom facilities etc..........

It just isn't that hard to get the registration fee in before the deadline. Even if you have to bug out, at least you are supporting the event & NCKA, and you get some swag & a shirt from the deal.

I guess all I want to convey is Let's all try to bring our A game to this event (whether or not we are actually competing), since Eric always does.

I discussed with my fishing partner while on the water that if someone comes on the radio for fish ID or size it will be instant DQ.

Rob, I understand what you are suggesting and I'm not against it.  I do however see it possibly being counter productive in folks keeping the wrong sized fish, or wrong colored fish to avoid getting DQ'd for calling out.  The end result would just less radio traffic.
Rob, no offense but I am against it, I agree with INSAYN, there are couple folks thats just getting started tofishing because we influence them with the MADNESS. Last thing we want for others to assume, I've been fishing for sometime now, yet, I still ask every now and then just to confirm. I think the variance of qualifying fish is too broad.. perhaps like Kayote suggested (Hali, Salmon, ling) add Cabie. Everyone that fishes deeper water should have a mandatory descender no questions.

Fish and Game could be standing at the weigh in station, and ticket those who chose to keep fish they shouldn't have.  It would be no different than if they went fishing on any other non tourney day.

Put a cap of 200 participants.
The campground group-rate and designated area is only for registered participants.
Distribute shelton decenders during the safety mtg.
Publicly shame anybody who doesn't know the size/limits/species regs.
Arrange for 2 extra porta-pottys and split the cost w/Jack.
Heaviest fish wins.

Problems solved?

I don't think this is really a problem, is it?  The non NCKA father-son mentioned earlier itt just bought matching predators withing the last month or so and are brand new to the madness.  Nothing wrong with them showing up.  Are there really people who are otherwise NCKA regs who show up without paying?  I dropped probably $400 preparing for GS8, camping, food, gas, etc, and I'm basically local.  Most guys spend more than that.  Are they really skipping out on a $40 registration while dropping north of $400 just to show up?

It was embarrassing listening to all of the regulation questions on Ch 69.

I don't know if it will help, but I can bring a few hundred copies of the ocean regs.

Yes, listening to fish identification and size limit questions over the VHF was embarrassing. And this has been an issue for a couple years. Unfortunately many NCKA members do not have a lot of experience identifying prohibited species because they are new members or rarely fish the ocean. But this is not an excuse for not knowing your fishing regulations.

I saw a DFG guy handing out fishing regulations and vermillion/canary/yelloweye rockfish identification chart at the launch the morning of GS8. He even asked me if I had a descender. I was very surprised that I did not see any game wardens at the weigh in this year, but I did come in pretty late.

Doubt $40 will cause skipping, if any then that means we wont have issues on capping it at 200, every group should have an ideal team captain to watch for the novices.. of course this is voluntary. Once volunteered you are responsible educating newbies in that group. Just my 2 cent

- a local told me that the public bathroom got overused - I felt this was odd, since having enough capacity in that regard is crucial to running a fishing port that hopes to attract visitors...  In any case, I hope we can focus on how to alleviate the pressure on the restroom facilities, and I've discussed it with Jack.  Maybe a couple more portapotties...

I arrived at the cove on Wednesday and paddled out to drop my traps and then went diving. On my return I went into the public bathroom and it was already pretty disgusting in there and this was Wednesday afternoon.

Not sure if I am missing something, but didn't all participants have to have a sponsor vouch for them.  I would think you would not want to vouch for someone that didn't know the regs at least for the species most likely going to be caught.

Personally I would like members to post pictures on the site of questionable and rare fish before they were released.  I have seen many fish while diving that look similar to a rare fish in the book, but think it could be a hybrid or juvenile vs adult.

Even long time fisherman can mix up limit numbers and size limits.  Someone threw back a 21 inch salmon, so it happens. I always check for new or changed regs each year and still forget about some of the rare fish that are not allowed. If I can't verify by memory or reg book it goes back.

As for speeders.  The ones that complain are usually the first to get tickets when enforcement takes place.  You have local fishers or hermets who sometimes are not happy with big groups and then you have business owners who love the infusion of money.   I saw a sign to slow down for playing children on a hill with a curve on a main road.  Come on.  Take the kids to the park. Why would anyone live in a location that is high vehicle traffic and think that's a play zone for kids.  NCKA can suggest slowing down because of complaints, but some people will always complain about something.

A couple of Portapottys at beach would have saved some walking.

I understand no one wants bad press or word of mouth for NCKA, but no matter if you quiz or not some will still screw up and I don't think it reflects the organization or those who put on the events.

But DFW will probably set up a check point on the ramp next year (for education purposes).

The "Heaviest" fish wins, really opens the game for all participants as it only takes one species caught to do it.  Granted, it could be a salmon, ling, cab, halibut or even a really old rockfish to do it.  Pick your poison and get after it.

Win Win for sure!
