Can anyone recommend me a good hat with a neck shade? Something that'll stay on my head when it gets windy and has a neck shade that won't just blow all over the place?

I've been using my baseball cap and a buff, but keep ending up with awkward little strips of sunburn where the buff doesn't cover...

Thanks!

I can't recommend a hat, but I use something that could fix your problem. Try a Hoo Rag www.hoorag.com. It keeps the sun off your face and you can wear a baseball hat over it. In the summer you can wet it to keep you cool and in the winter it keeps you warm without a lot a bulk. They have lots of designs and other ways to wear them. Here's a picture of mine

I'll second the neck gaitor (whatever it's called...), bought a Columbia hat on sale, large/long bill and neck flap w/ a clip that attaches the hat to your shirt/coat if it blows off - in the wind, the flap doesn't really work, and with the glare off the water - I still get sunburned... better off with a giant sombrero if it didn't create so much drag :)

Hoorag or Buff all the way, I've been using them for years.  And as a red head, I can guarantee that they work on albino skin.
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

I forget which brand mine is but I'll check for ya when I get home later (I think it's NRS). I like it. And usually wear my sun hat on top of a baseball cap, with the strap under my chin. But...I do kinda envy the guys who look like Kayak Fishing Ninjas OTW.

I've been doing the Buff plus baseball cap, but last time I ended up with a nasty red strip on the back of my neck between the buff and the collar of my wetsuit.

Maybe I just need to work on my ninja buff arrangement skills...

It also bugs the crap out of me how the Buff makes my sunglasses fog up if I pull it up over me nose...

I have a Tilly and it's awesome. I've had it for over 5 years now and it's been on every I adventure I've gone on in that time. They are well backed and supported by the company that makes them. I bought mine when a local hiking/camping shop went out of business and paid like $40 for it. I think they are pretty pricey if you buy them normally. I don't know that I'd pay full retail, but it's definitely my favorite hat.

You could always get a Stetson...

How about the sun runner from Outdoor Research.  I have both a Tilly and a OR Seattle Sombrero.  Love them both.  One for rain, one for dry.  But if you wanna go baseball cap this looks good.

Barefoot - I'm actually headed to REI after work today to check out that OR Sun Runner. It gets really good reviews, and I like that it has the drawstring to keep the neck shade from flapping around too much.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

+1  I use my buff too but I end up peeling it off below the nose and I end up with weird sunburns like you described.  Hate the fogging!

I use an "Adventure Hat."  It has a neck flap, a wide brim, and a chin strap for windy days.   I only use the strap on windy days.  You can make the hat fit tighter or looser around your head.

The only problem I have is when I'm on my friend's boat and he is driving fast, the brim flaps in the wind.   I have to hold the brim.   It may be that is so old and I have washed it so much that the brim lost its stiffness.

Go to sundayafternoon.com.  They're on sale now for $30.40.

I love the Kokatat GORE-TEX® Nor'wester….  They also have a  baseball type hat with a flap that can snap in front, cover your whole face.  I'll get one of those soon to test.

The Convertible Cap provides UPF30+ sun protection and has a removable neck cape that covers the neck and ears and can be snapped around the front of the face for complete concealment. The cape also has venting panels, and the sides of the hat can be flipped up for additional cooling.

This is the hat I use, large brim keeps the sun off and the manufacturer is famous for their product's durability.
