I'm heading up to Oregon in the morning, but don't need to be up there until the evening the day after.  My plan is to hit the American in the morning for shad, until the heat runs us off the water.  Then I'll point the car north.  Looking to stop somewhere north of Redding but before the Oregon border, and get some fishing in.  Looking for some recommendations on cheap places to stay near decent places to fish.  I don't want to stray too far off of 5.  Anyone?

Get a room in Mt. Shasta for the night, fish the Upper Sac through Dunsmuir in the afternoon/evening.  Great fishing, easy access all through town, all within a minute of I-5.  Find the Ted Flay fly shop in Dunsmuir, they'll give you the lowdown.  And don't forget the Dunsmuir Brewery Works.  :smt003

If you're looking for stillwater, then staying in Yreka and fishing Irongate for yellow perch and bass is an option. If you've never ate it, YP is da bomb! Same family as walleye if you've ever ate that...fried some up for Flyaker on a recent fishing trip, he will attest! Weather is heating up, should be a no-brainer to get a bunch...

Sweet! I was disappointed when they put them in with the other panfish and had a 25 fish limit. I see now that it doesn't apply to yellow perch this year!

The bad part is cleaning 100 perch is no fun, but it's worth it...

Lake Siskiyou is another good stillwater option for trout and is right next to the Freeway.

Thanks fellas.  I knew I could count on you.  Sac to Yreka is about 4 hours.  And Yreka to where I'm going in Oregon is about 5 hours.  Sounds like a good target.  I have a feeling I'll be leaving Sac by late morning as it is going to get HOT.  I'll probably have time to hit Irongate on Thursday evening AND Friday morning.  Anyone way up there want to join?

I love me some yellow perch.  I didn't even know they had them in CA.

Jealous! Wish I was up there!

My parents have had a cabin on Copco right above Irongate since the 60's and I've ate yellow perch since I was a kid. My favorite way is deep fried in a wonton wrapper with your choice of dipping sauce. One of my favorite foods of all time!

Fried up a bunch during trout opener, the square things are experimental, bear/venison hamburger inside, LOL

They should have just finished spawning and will be hungry. Good luck, I know you will slay them!
