I've recently moved up to mendocino and have been getting into free diving. I'm getting tired of renting gear everytime so I've been looking at suits. I've been renting an xcel hyperflex 7/6 from the dive shop and it's kept me warm so I was looking for something similar, preferably in the $250 price range. Also I would occasionally use the suit for scuba diving and diving in Southern California (anywhere from sd up to the central coast). Anyone have any suggestions? Also if anyone has any old gear that they'd like to sell I could use a float, ab iron, etc.

What wetsuit size are you looking for.
Whereabouts in Mendocino did you move to?
SubSurface Progression in Ft Bragg has quite a selection of gear, some suited for freediving.
The Freedive Shop in Sacramento has all you need if you happen to go that way or you can order online.
Speaking of online check out http://www.makospearguns.com/
A 7 mm freediving Yamamoto wetsuit will just be about in your price range.
Good luck !

I need a large tall. I'm living in Willits. I've been renting a xcel hydroflex from subsurface progression and was thinking about picking one of  those up, I know they carry a similar suit made by aqualung as well. I'll check out the Yamamotos though. I plan on doing some spearfishing in the suit as well, does camo make a significant difference for that compared to black?

If you're going to be spearing maybe an open cell would be better.  Subsurface has Omer, Beauchat and JBL.

Camo or Black is more of a personal preference IMO.  These fish don't run away.

If you don't mind used, Blake at Sub-Surface still had some previous rental suits when I was there last week.

He doesn't rent open cell suits and doesn't sell them used.  You can rent open cell suits at the Freedive Shop in Sac.

I use a Picasso kelp camo 7m and LOVE it. I have yet to get cold. I actually use it for free diving as well as scuba. It's about 10+ years old and still awesome.

I got my open cell thinking I'd use it for scuba too, but only have once. The Yamamoto neoprene compresses more than other types, and it gets colder at depth. I'd get a freedive suit for freediving, and rent if you'll be on Scuba.

I feel like there may be a manufacturer that makes an open cell suit with tougher neoprene than Yamamoto 39. Beuchat? Elios?
