Realized I needed something like this.  It is bigger than I anticipated but it installed on the tracks in 15 seconds.  So any thoughts or feedback on where the best place to keep it mounted on the yak?  Mostly I just want quick access and secure rod storage that will not interfere with paddling, I'm leaning towards mid shin.

In that position, the reel will be on the outside and possibly get in the way.  Flip the holder around so that the reel face towards the inside.

good point , I slapped it on there just to see how the mounts worked and did not really think about direction.

See the rectangular indentation right above the  cup holder. Install a Scotty flush mount bracket and use that to hold your Scotty fly rod holder.

You can also use it for other rod holders, fishfinder and camera mounts too!

If you mount it on the port (Left) gunnel, you can troll with the rod in the rod holder. I know you fly guy like casting, but, you will catch just as many fish trolling. Personally, I have all of my rod holders mounted behind the seat when fly casting and keep the fore deck clear of rigging. This allows me to manage the line easier with less tangles.

well I went out on Del Valle today

Originally I had the Scotty set so that the reel faced inward

I quickly discovered that is a PITA set up. Its hard to safely handle the rod and the Rod/reel did not set well due to the angle of the mount on the track.  I flipped it and then slid it back towards the seat some more. No paddling interference, no line snagging on the mount either.  I found the rods sat stably even when rocked by boat wakes.

I watched a guy near me on his new white yak land a nice striper...me not so much.

Next purchase will be a new reel and a sinking fly line so I can reach tose fish holding at 15-20 feet.

The water level at Del Valle is Full.

and I had a ball

You might want to get shooting heads with a running line.  You'll have a lot more options to fish using shooting heads.
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

Yeah, I paddled all the way to the dam and at times it was howling then next minute it was calm.

I was using an airflo coldwater sniper line in sink 7 on my 8wt., love that line on the kayak since it casts well with the head pulled in the guides really well.

Fish were deep, 15-30ft is where I was marking them at the last spot, they were about 12-15ft. earlier in the day.

How has that rod holder worked out for you? I just bought that same kayak and need to order a fly rod holder for it. Did the part that mounts it to the rail come with it or is that a separate piece?
