I know old thread but in the market for new reel. Conventional reel. Hated the Cardiff  :smt009.
Looking for some recommendations from personal experience.  No more that $200.
Mainly rockcod jigging .
Heard great things about Avet and abu.
Even willing to buy used too.
Thanks for input.

I really like my Penn fathom and squall for larger reels. Lately for rockfish I've been using a diawa aird costal (on sale online) which is a bass sized reel for the ocean and I love it. My GF just caught a 37.5 ling using it so it's plenty strong.

We have a Cardiff 300. Not a fan. For salt, we use:
Tiger Stick Lite (Medium heavy or heavy)
Trevala Rod (Medium or Medium light)
Abu Round reels (5500)
Shimano Calcutta 400
Avet SLX
Abu Revo NACL 50 (low profile)

Our fav setup is Trevala with a calcutta or Avet. I personally would take the Avet.

I'm a penny pincher when it comes to fishing gear, but that doesn't mean I don't like nice gear. Been happy with my daiwa Lexa 300 with a power handle. Avet is my 2nd choice.. On trevala rods

Abu c3 6000 series or even better the c4. Easy thumb button to drop down line and just a bump of the handle to engage and set the hook. A day spent dropping down and reeling up it makes it easy to have a reel that doesn't take much effort. Quality Abus seem pretty bullet proof. I don't great care of mine but still no problems. Available in right or left. Parts are everywhere

What size C4?

Abu 6601 is what I use(lefty) model. The blue reel is the c4. Notice the comfy full size thumb button
Silver reel is the c3. Still good but smaller button to freespool than the c4. Both have instant engage with a twitch of handle.
I drop down, slap the handle to lock it in and when I feel like I'm to far of the bottom easy to thumb the button and drop more line.

With the Abu reel the last two digits designate handle side
00 is handle on right side
01 is left side

First digit designates size of reel
4 =pretty small. Maybe more freshwater?
5= not bad I use one for river fishing and with braid would be fine for rockfish I'm guessing. I only have one and don't take it to the salt. Sentimental reasons
6=ideal for me . I have about five of them. same diameter as the 5 series just wider holds more line. Still not to heavy. Seems good for everything I do.
7 = even bigger I guess holds lots of line probably would be pretty good but I have never needed one bigger than my 6. Might be getting a bit heavy

These statements are purely my speculation in no way am I affiliated or qualified to speak on Abu garcias behalf

Pickin' up my lefty avet 2 speed sxj tomorrow, pairing with a nice pinot, I mean a trevala ML medium fast tip 7'.  The variety of fish that will leap into my kayak should be internationally recognized, over a 20 year period of course.......

I've used a 500 and 300 Shimano Tekota paired with travala rods and i haven't had any issues. I have an extra Tekota 500 for sale.

Why lefties?
Yea, my florida buddy says it's kinda gay, no offense, I guess I've been a spinner all my life and am used to supporting the leverage with my right arm and cranking with my left hand.  I found how unconditioned I am with a right handed conventional when I had to bring an 80lb stingray to the kayak in Tomales and I could crank like a mofo with the right hand, but my left arm felt the burn.  I think the finesse of handling the reel with my left hand is more familiar. I read about a conspiracy by the reel makers about conventional and right handed only production.  Cannot remember the issue.  You can read about it in the annals of reel mythologies.  My .02........ :smt006
