Just pulled the trigger today and bought a porta bote (folding boat). Its the only option to take the family and inlaws fishing/boating without trailering and taking up space. It folds to the size of a longboard surfboard. Now all I need is an outboard motor. Looking for a new one and recommendations for a good shop to buy it from. Thanks in advance

Herb

What brand are you looking for?  Honda?  Mercury?  Size/HP?

....oh, forgot to mention this brand Leer.  Worth looking up info on.  They are propane powered.  Their small ones work off those little disposable propane bottles.  I've played with these a bit & they are pretty fun & have good power to weight.

Lastly is Torqeedo.  Electric outboard with integrated battery.  Great power & long lasting.

I'm looking for 9.9hp max. Nothing too heavy hopefully. Brand-wise, I really have no idea which one to get. I'm still doing some research and comparisons online for a good all around motor. Something that'll give me less headache and problems and wont break the budget is what I'm looking for.

I thought I saw a propane powered outboard at West Marine today. Didnt really read details

LEER is making huge strides to take a piece of the market.

Honda is usualy a safe bet.  Had honda's for many years.  Always a reliable motor.  Typically heavier & more costly up front.  Sold Mercury thru a number of different dealerships.  Mercury & Nissan are basically 1 in the same.  No expereince with Johnson or E-rude in the small O/B world.  Highly impressed with the performance of the Suzuki motors I've run (115hp is a ROCKET!)  A bit of an overkill for the small boat you have though :smt005.

Personally, I would say Mercury followed by Honda if your primary consideration is $.  If primary consideration is weight, protability, etc then I would look at the Torqeedo.  They even make a 80hp Electric Outboard (480volt).  Ran it in the Monterey Bay & IMPRESSED!!!!

My bass fishing buddies swear by Honda and Mercury.  Can't really go wrong with either of those.

Congrats on the new addition to your fleet captain.

Sweet! I picked up a used 12' one recently. It's great for picking up chicks with di... err, clams. I plan on taking it out into the big blue once I get the transducer/ff mount. The first mod was porta-wheeleez!

I purchased a 2.3 honda from Outboard motor in Oakland because they carried it. I'd stay away from the propane stuff unless you had to. Are you partial to any brands?

Awesome!! Now, I have someone to bother to show me the ropes rigging it  :smt003. I picked the 14' in case the whole clan wants to fish. I was also biased with the 12's 570# capacity limit, Although I saw a lot of GREAT deals on Craigslist 12 footers. I would love to see the Porta-wheeleze you made. I didnt buy their dolly/wheels. I think theyre way too overpriced for a set of wheels and aluminum brace. I would use it on local lakes for a while before I hit the big blue with it. Not really partial to any brands, as long as it wont give me a lot of headaches down the road.

It was ~$2500 out the door after tax and a couple of seats for the 14' model. If I wanted a 12footer, I could've gotten one from Craigslist at fraction of the cost. There's no way I'm getting rid of my yaks. My NCKA addiction is WAAYYY Beyond any help.

Let me know how your 3 hour tour goes. :smt044

Not a bad Idea. I might start my own tour/fishing/guide service  :smt044

I'm interested in how you're going to mod it so please keep us updated.

Yea check Bass pro shop ... then buy some place else!  :smt005
Man went in there last weekend and everything seems to be higher priced then any other place I've gone too. Fun to visit but keep the wallet in the pants. How many people can fit in your porta boat? Does it come with oars or only powered by motor? Seems like a 4 stroke would be awful heavy for a boat like that.
