I tried to catch those a few times in TX. The trinity river (where this pic was taken) is not to far from Houston. Those things are insanely large and strong. Kinda like a sturgeon but with alligator jaws on it. Amazing fish!

They also spear em down south.  With the very bad viz, it's gotta be intimidating to tangle with one underwater!!!

Much rather be shooting them from the boat with a bow... than face to face with them in the water  :smt003

Cool, I have never seen one of those before.  Kinda freaky looking.

The In Fisherman did a couple of TV shows this year on alligator gar.

They are supposed to be good eating, but my gut tells me that those guys didn't eat them......

Pure trophy hunting sort of annoys me.  If I kill a fish, I'm gonna eat it.

Speaking of spear fishing, anyone hear of the free diver who speared the "Gargantuan Grouper " only to have it pull him down and tie him up in the rocks...Killed him...These monsters would probably just eat you :smt106

Aliigator gars eat fish not people. Though just like a Bluefish or other predator, they can give you a real nasty bite if you mishandle a caught one. Hooking one of those in a kayak would be a nightmare, it could breech and kill you jsut by jumpiing on you. No thanks. I'd want a big boat.

I sometimes caught a smaller related fish, Atlantic Needlefish, when fishing for 'snapper" Bluefish in North Carolina. Mouth full of nasty teeth. They fight well on light tackle but then you have to get them in and struggle to unhook them without being bitten.

Remind me to check your bait bucket at Mendo  :smt003

On a scary side note DWR recovered two alligator gars from the Tracy fish screen a few years ago, each was about 6 feet long!
