There is a small local river that I paddle down every once in a while that is pretty secluded.  About a month ago, my brother and I were paddling down it and heard gunshots up ahead.  It was pretty freaky as we had nowhere else to go but down stream right on by the area where the shots were coming from.  Turns out they were just kids having fun, but scary nonetheless as we came up on them.  Lesson learned (never paddle alone, especially in remote areas).  You just never know what you're going to come across.

Back in the 90's there was a big bass tourney on the delta. One well known pro knew a farmer and had the farmer buck his shotgun at any bass boats coming down this slough. Friend of mine his dad was fishing the tourney and got some buckshot his way as we was wide open on throttle coming down this slough. Talk about high stakes bass fishing. Most pros I know are a-holes. But I guess the nature of money turns everyone into A-holes!

I almost decided to carry my pistol with me when I did long distance biking.  There are a number of people who think that it's funny to do things like attempt to side swipe you, pull up just behind you and blare the horn, or pull up alongside and throw a cup of soda in your face.
"Pedo Viejo" is what Antonio called me.

my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

I  and another NCKA were yelled at this year while kayaking on the lower Salinas river by duck hunters in sticks and reeds  piled duck blind...told to get off the river cause "they" were trying to hunt...told us we were on a closed river-had not been closed yet- and then later we got some radio traffic from another two NCKA members that were coming behind us down the same stretch and got some stray shotgun pellets bounced off one of their kayaks...I think they called them in to dfg and when dfg arrived the hunters had ran away.... pretty mean sounding idiot type that yelled at us..I was unarmed and he was armed and not 50 feet away yelling at us and ready to start trouble....bullshit

Being peppered by a shotgun is the shits. I would have just said sorry and given em the right of way.

man that poor guy ,getting shot in the stomach and having to paddle around and wonder if it is gonna be the end....no cell phone to call out....why not call someone and say come get me or get rescue out here

Some folks dont bring phones for fear of them getting wet....but I would not feel safe without one

Those guys (or guys just like them) spoke to polepole and I as well on the Salinas. "Hey, we're hunting here!"  Probly different group, because we didn't feel very threatened by them.  I felt more like they were just letting us know they were there.  If they hadn't spoken, I would not have seen them.  My instinct at the time was they were letting us know so we wouldn't set up to fish within their line of fire.  We were paddling back to the launch so a wave and....goodbye.

The original story sounds a little weird...questionable..but stranger things have happened.

this guy yelled at 'me'  mostly, as I was talking to the other kayak as we paddled through the duck blinds area unaware....his tone was nasty and he yelled "hey we are TRYING to hunt here, followed by you kayaks are not even supposed to be on this river it is a steel head closed river.....and he WAS nasty, later we met some hunters unloading their gear and dingy as we pulled our yaks back out of the river to go home...nicest guys you would ever meet and we chatted and learned from each other about yak fishing and duck hunting ....but the boys early that day were banjo players for sure

Good call. No point arguing with a guy with a gun while you are a sitting duck.
