The guy is IMHO: not a stand up guy, he should of opened his mouth.

He is a dirt bag for not doing the right thing knowing good damn well he was wrong.  Next words out of my mouth would of been swim to shore !

You discovered the guy is no good for the cost of a ticket. Sell your share of the boat or buy him out, be done with him. Not a terribly expensive way to find out someone is no good. It could have been a lot worse.

I would rather fish from my yak but trashed my shoulder a year ago and can't do salmon distances.

Hobie says you still can.
Get rid of your portion of the boat and get a Hobie.

pay it to cover your ass first...then ask him if he thinks he should pay it back to you..listen to his answer and that will tell you if you ever even had a "friend"

if he pays...keep him as a friend ....but keep one eye on him for a while  :smt005

if he does not -then it only cost you that much to avoid a bigger problem later down the road....you got off cheap compared to some folks "friends"

imho

I was boarded and the first thing they asked is if I had any warrants or weapons! WTF?
I told him I had a flare gun and he checked the expiration date on the cartridges, then I told him
i had a good filet knife and a club to knock out a lively salmon or two.He finally asked for my fishing
license and the asked for my drivers license to verify my identity.
Makes you wonder what they are fishing for???
Sorry if I got off the subject..... the lesson is....don't fish with someone who doesn't know and abide
by all the rules... Just a tip....

Agreed. Pay the fee, ask to be reimbursed, dissolve the partnership one way or another. Look in to a pedal-yak. Oh yeah, and what Adam said.

i would pay the ticket and talk about it man to man, then go out for a drink and move forward. i'm sure an honest talk would set things right. you wouldn't want YOUR NEIGHBOR to be your enemy. that would TOTALLY SUCK.

In my chums defense he did offer to take the citation but too late in the game and the warden didn't feel like issuing another one. Also he says he is willing to wright a letter to the court and take the fall. The question really is will that do any good or will they issue him a citation as well and still hit me for being at the helm. Then we won't be out $500 we will be out a grand.  Stranger things have happened.

That should work.  Or take him to court, plead not guilty due to his responsibility.  Judge says You?  He  says Yes,  Case closed.  Might even get off for free, when you both explain the warden "didn't want to take the time."

Judges can be cool, especially when people stand n front of them telling the truth.  It's so rare for them.

Im gonna sound slightly crazy here, but split the ticket.
On the boat together, into the boat together, assuming you split any fish caught, and if you lost a rig you'd split it, so split the ticket.

Guy I fish with that's what we do, everything is half and half.

A couple things,

First do whatever necessary to get that citation out of your name, I was cited a few years ago for (forgetting) to tag abalone while on the water in a yak, (OK now but not in 2007). Anyhow the judge looked directly at the prosecutor and said "hows his record?" The guy says clean, the judge looks at me and says thats good for you, and went on to drop the charges in leiu of a donation to SCAN. (thats another story in itself).

You need to keep YOUR record clear in case of another unintended "ah shit".

Second, that day a similar case was heard and in the end the judge did right by the guys because they both showed up and told their story honestly,

And I'm of the opinion that good neighbors are worth a little trouble here and there, work it out and keep the friend.

^ he's got it right. Plead your case. The time off work will do more than you ever could to instruct your neighbor in the art of being a stand up guy.
