No not looking for mma lessons, Im looking to add this technique to my arsenal.now my question is as im somewhat new to it.I flip jigs but nothing too serious like 1/4oz jig on 14lb mono.so in line im waiting on one of my rods to sell and im gonna get a zombie Dee Thomas edition flip n stick.now im thinking
Daiwa steez ex 7:0.1
Daiwa zillion type r 7:3.1
Shimano core 7:0.1
Id like the steez but im a little worried about beating it up .
The zillion is the heaviest of the three but being aluminum its a little tougher.
Now the core not having an external brake adjustment makes it a pain.
What are you guys who flip n punch consistently think.
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

I really like the lews speed spool it's a tough reel at a reasonable price I use a 7.1 I think it's about 31 inches per turn you really want something high speed to yank em through the tough stuff   I team it up with a fenwick hmg it has a lot of backbone and works for me hope this helped ya out  :smt001

I think the speed of the reel is not to important. When you are flipping you don't pull a large amount of line out. Normally about two rod lengths weather you are standing in a kayak or on a bass boat. I use a 7'2" rod or an 8ft rod heavy weight for reels I use Shimano Chronacrh less inexpensive than the core but one good reel. One thing is for sure if you plan to flip you will give the rod and reel combo a good beating.

Good Luck and its FLIPPING AND PITCHING

the rod and reel setup that im trying to put together im using for flipn and punching.you know dual purpose.I consider flipn and pitching to be the same.punching, is im gonna drop anywhere from 1-2oz weights through thick matted vegetation.I thought that was called punching but I could be wrong most of the time I am

Flip'n pitch'n and punch'n I get it. Your on the right track. You might want to use larger than 14 lb line.

I've got three rods set up for this.

1)  Shimano Curado 200D 7.0:1 on a Kistler Magnesium 7' All Day Flipping rod spooled with moss green 65lb Power Pro braided line.

2)  Shimano Curado 200D 7.0:1 on a Kistler Helium 3 X-Heavy 7' 11" Fast Fishing rod spooled with moss green 80lb Power Pro braided line.

3)  Shimano Curado 200D 7.0:1 on a Kistler Magnesium 7' All Day Flipping rod spooled with 20lb PLine Flouroclear line.

I absolutely love flipping and punching.  Having moved here from Florida last summer I really miss all the matted vegetation and tannic stained water that we had down there.  The Delta is as close as I can find to those conditions around here but it's still not quite the same.  Each of my setups has their own job.  Number 1 is probably my all around favorite setup for a variety of conditions and is my go too for stained water and 1oz weights or less.  Number 2 is my "Big Gun" for crashing 1 1/2oz and 2oz tungsten bombs through the thickest mats of vegetation where you really need the added weight to get through.  Number 3 is my clear water stick.  I believe the flourocarbon line gets me a few more bites than braid when fishing clear water.  Again I only like going up to about 1oz weights on this setup but I have fished 1 1/4oz weights on ocassion with no noticeable issues.

Baits is a whole other converstaion.  A few of my favorites include:  Berkeley Power Bait Chigger Craw, Gambler Paddle tail worms, B.B. Cricket, and Paycheck bait's Punch Skirts.  I use mostly Strike King Tour Grade Tungsten Weights and Picasso Tungsten Flipping Weights pegged with any one of the various weight stops that I own.

This is by far one of the most deadly techniques for big bass in the summertime.  I have had some mind blowing days down in South Florida pulling big fish through the water lettuce, kissimmie grass, and pads down there!!

With the new vine weed growing in the delta ( which over took hyacinth ) you will need 65lbs braid to pull the toads out. Use a 3/4 to 1oz jig to punch the weeds. I actually miss the hyacinth because it floated and provide good cover for big bass. The new vine stuff goes from the surface down to the bottom in shallow water. It's tuff stuff. For a rod a 7-7 1/2' heavy is good.

im trying to avoid the braid.im thinkin 20# cxx but will that get through the nasty stuff.i really like the steez but 65#braid and droping bombs and yankin fish out of that stuff might tear it up too prematurely.at 599$ a pop im a little hesitant.but the zombie dee Thomas edition has the dt guides which is designed for braid so maybe il go with the zillion type r
