Headed up to Clear Lake Monday morning with the idea of catching my first 10 plus pound bass and dreams of a big cat fish. I had never fished the lake before and only had a foggy idea of something resembling a plan. I Launched just south of Kelsey Creek, and started looking for beds in the shallow water.

almost immediately I spotted my first bed with a nice five or six pound fish that spooked as if I had fired a cannon ball into the water. As I headed down the bank I found a ton of really nice fish that were all very spooky. I finally found a fish that held to her bed and flipped a brown and orange jig at her, she inhaled it. After the excitement I moved on only to find more terribly spooky fish.

Moved out away from the shore and started throwing a six inch osprey swimbait for a while, but then managed to cast it right off my rod trying to whip it to far from the yak. Switched over to a smoke and purple flake senko to find some success, landing four 3-5lb fish.

Decided to take a break and headed into town. When i got into Lakeport I went into Clear lake Outdoors to buy some catfish bait. The staff (wish I would have got the mans name) was very helpful. I asked about catfishing and he directed us to the Lucerne Cutoff exit off hwy 29. My buddy and I fished in about 8 feet of water next to the bridge just after dark for about two hours and both landed nice cats, a 28" and 29" fish, mine was the 29" :smt001.

Over all a great trip. I have never seen so many 5 plus pound bass in my life. I can't wait to go back and explore the lake some more, and maybe find the one I'm looking for.

I may be making my first trip there in early May. Any tips for a place to stay in the area?

Thanks for sharing.  The Lucerne cutoff at the bridge is where I fished the last time out there.  Caught most with bhogs.

How were the weeds in the water?  There was a lot the last time I was up there.  I believe they spray stuff on them to kill it off.

I'll be up there in June for 4 days.  Can't wait...

There wasn't really any weeds to speak of, there was some algae but not to bad. You could see about 2.5 down on average.

It's Dave and Troy at Clear Lake Outdoors.  Can be a fun time of year.  This weather will put a lot of fish on beds.  I am hoping to take my boat out next week.
