I'm going to be up in Truckee for a few days starting this Wednesday (3/19/14).  Anybody have any recommendations for kayak fishing this time of year in the area?  Is Tahoe trout fishing a good choice this time of year?  I have a few days up there so wouldn't mind trying out a few different lakes.  Please include any lures/baits, etc. that would provide the best chance at success.  Thanks!

I don't know anything about the regs and access but there's Donner lake along with three reservoirs nearby: Prosser Creek, Boca, and Stampede.  I've fly-fished the creeks in the summer but never been on the water in a yak.

I just moved to that area and haven't had much luck yet. I hit Stampede on Saturday and there were a lot of small koks in the 10-12" range. Not much else for me. Went to Prosser a few weeks back and got a few 11-13" bows. Some really ugly fish there right now, not much color and lots of growths and sores? Possibly low water levels causing problems? I also picked up a nasty little hardhead as a bonus. I haven't fished Boca yet, but I saw some boat anglers out there this weekend.

I haven't fished the Truckee, but I mainly see fly fisherman working that river. Most areas I see would be rough to kayak due to low water. Lots of plastic would be coming off for sure. I'm not familiar with the regs there, but there might be some barbless areas? I know the Little Truckee has some barbless as well.

Thanks.  I think I'm going to give Donner Lake a try as I read there is a trout plant there this week.   Maybe give Stampede a try too.
