But that brings up an interesting question.

If you catch a hybrid salmon, what are the regulations on keeping it?  Hybrid fish are like mules, they are sterile (at least they are supposed to be).  So there theoretically would be no concerns from a biological standpoint with killin' it.

Let's say theoretically someone caught a Co-nook.  Would they be violating the law by keeping it?  A warden sees it, says, that's a Coho because of the gums, but has distinguishing features of a Chinook.  Tickets you. Goes to court and maybe they took a sample of the fish to a DFG lab and found it was a cross.  What would happen?

From a legal standpoint, chinook are specifically listed as the only salmon allowed to be taken in the rivers, subject to certain regulations.  If your fish is a cross, are you violating that?  If its 50% chinook, does that meet the minimum definition?

I know, I'm splitting hairs here, but its a tuesday morning and I'm bored.

Actually, I think coho are the only ones you can't take in California streams - if another species is there (pink, dog, chum, sockeye...  etc.) I think they're fair game in streams where chinook can be retained.

In the regs, it defines salmon, but in the special regs, they always say: Daily Bag Limit - Chinook Salmon.

Example, Klamath regs from the 13-14 Supplemental:
2. Klamath River main stem from 3,500 feet downstream of Iron Gate Dam to mouth.
a. Klamath River from 3,500 feet downstream of the Iron Gate Dam to the Highway 96 bridge at Weitchpec.
January 1 to August 14.
0 Chinook salmon
2 hatchery trout or hatchery steelhead**
Fall Run Quota 6,801 Chinook Salmon August 15 to December 31, 2013.
4 Chinook salmon – no more than 3 fish over 22 inches total length until sub quota is met, then 0 fish over 22 inches total length.
2 hatchery trout or hatchery steelhead**
Fall Run Quota Exception: Chinook salmon over 22 inches total length may be retained from 3,500 feet downstream of Iron Gate Dam to the Interstate 5 bridge when the department determines that the adult fall-run Chinook salmon spawning escapement at Iron Gate Hatchery exceeds 8,000 fish. Daily bag and possession limits specified for fall-run Chinook salmon apply during this exception.
b. Klamath River downstream of the Highway 96 bridge at Weitchpec.
January 1 to August 14.
2 Chinook salmon
2 hatchery trout or hatchery steelhead**
Fall Run Quota 20,003 Chinook Salmon August 15 to December 31, 2013.
4 Chinook salmon – no more than 3 fish over 22 inches total length until sub quota is met, then 0 fish over 22 inches total length.
2 hatchery trout or hatchery steelhead**
Fall Run Quota Exception: Spit Area (within 100 yards of the channel through the sand spit formed at the Klamath River mouth). This area will be closed to all fishing after 15% of the Lower Klamath River sub-quota has been met.

But in the ocean it makes no distinction, otherwise than the obvious that Coho/Steelhead cannot be taken.

At what depth would the compression cause your can of beer to be crushed and thus causing a gigantic party foul?

Excellent question, and I think that would be dependent on can vs bottle, light versus dark beer, as light beer tastes great and is less filling, so would it offer less resistance to the compression from the change in atmosphere?

GF when she was on the Endevor, in Georges Banks, used to place styrafoam cups with writings on them with their trolling scientific gear and see what they looked like after they went down.  She said stuff would come back all funny and distorted.

.....and then use those cups for light beer?

Curiously,

C'mon now, play nice.  Not everyone gets the nuance of regulations without a few hard knocks, lucky its us helping straighten him out v's a warden.
