My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

Definitely get an open cell, if its not in the budget, hold out till it is.

I have an Omer, its awesome at sitting in a tote in my garage collecting dust....It was a great suit when I used it though :)

The Freedive shop in West Sacramento has a wide selection you can try on before you buy.  Also, Kelly's Ocean Sport in Concord does the same.  Anyone else you buy a suit from just boughtit from them and marked it up, unless you buy online.

I know several guys that have the Mako and none are dissatisfied.  For your first open cell it might make sense.

Bamboo reef in SF had a few freedive suits in stock the last time I was in, Anderson's in Pacifica had even more. Yazbeck for sure and maybe some other brands. I already have my Cressi Technica that works for me so I wasn't really paying too much attention to their selections. Freedive shop has had the best single collection of suits of any store that I've been in  -- if you're serious I'd probably go there first to save a lot of driving.

I use a Picasso 7mil and have never been cold. I'm going on my 12th year with the same suit...it's getting worn but still love it.

Josh at Neptonics in Santa Cruz may have suits. Check the site. I'm happy with my Mako. Probably have 30-40 trips on it. Sizing was too large for me though. I'm right on the border between  XL/XXL on their charts but I ended up in an L.

Definitely open-cell. I have a 7mm Yazbeck and a 5mm Spetton. Even the 5mm keeps me warm, but you can't go wrong with the 7mm.
