We launched from MBK at around 6:30 Me alien and another guest whos name I cant remember ( bill for now)  ( sorry please fill it in alien ). alien was boutn and determined to catch a halibut, me and bill had long since given up and decided to go for lingcod. I wanted to try our my new shakespear tiger ocean pole and the depth meter biolt into the ocuma reel. Bills fish finder was having a hard time registering fis, and I also noticed that mine would act buggy next to his. We kayaked out to the yellow bouy and caught one or two small rock cod. I almost lost my new jig called the ling thing. But I am beginning to think that allot of fancy jigs are made more for the fishemen and less for the fish. Next we paddled out by the red bell and rigged for sanddabs. Alien had a really nice setup for sandabs and I quickly build one and tested it. It seemed like we were catching allot of rock cod, blues I think their called and very few dabs. Still the ilusive MB ling eludded us. At about 11:30 I had to head in. I caught 7 rock cod and alien gave me three int the hopes that he would make his catch up ( hope you did ). I have to say that I had more fun out there today then I have since I have been kayak fishing. I am also posting a pic of alien and one of his catches.

On a side note I stoped by MBK to find out first hand what happened with the concil meeting and I found that they were really concerned with the bad press they have been getting. The GM was upset and worried that it may cost them buisiness and also they have gotten some flame mails from anglers in the area. It was stressed to me that MBK is really supportive of kayak fishing and the comments at the commision do not reflect their views in any way. I took the time to appologize personally for a flame mail that I had sent to them and I put in an order for some kayak equipment.

I would like to say that after the explanation from Mika about what had happened at the council meeting I realised that MBK was just as much a victim as we were. I personally will be going back there for my kayaking needs and I would urge other members of the comunity to stop in and hear their side of the story and maybe buy something to show your support. as an ally MBK can really help the anglers in the Monterey area.

Depth leaglity.
Last night I looked up the depth that is ok to take for rock cod and on the DFG website it says that its 180 feet anyone know what its sopose to be we were under the impression at the time that it was 120ft.
It would be nice to have a definitive answer.

I had pulled out the regs and insisted that I had read that the depth limit was 120 ft for rockfish.  So I stand corrected.  Sorry Alien!  Man, I had no idea that you caught all those dabs during the time that I was trying to get over to the red bouy!

I went out with Alien and Eadint and Alien headed out along the sandy beach because some birds were feeding and he was targeting Buts.  We went straight to the yellow bouy hoping to get a ling.  But we just kept getting small rockcod.  They werent' as large as the ones we hooked on 8/19 and they were a different color and all seemed to be the same size and color.  So after Alien caught up to us we headed to the red bell bouy and I picked up a 7 inch smelt on the way over with my sabiki and hoped to drop it in at the red bouy.  But this is where I told Alien I thought we could only fish to 120 ft and so we didn't go out to the deeper area that we caught a number of rockfish last time.  We headed to shallower water and I only picked up a few blues and then caught a fish that I thought I had by the tail because of the funny way that he tugged at the line--clearly harder than most of the bites that morning.  I pulled in a nice Ocean Whitefish.  Right after that a medium sized seal began to aggressively circle my kayak.  He went around and around for what seemed like a good 8-10 minutes.  He even butted my bow at one point.  I was yelling at him to go but he just kept swirling around.  Finally he left.  I don't know what he was so angy about.  I thought maybe I was trespassing on his turf but Alien just thought he wanted my fish.  I certainly could see how a big seal could knock you out of your kayak.  Any suggestions on what to do if a seal harrasses you?

It was a good day but not as active as my earlier trip to Monterey--and no ling this time.  The water was real brown so I don't know if that affected the fishing.  The whitefish was good eating, firmer flesh than the blues and many of the other rockfish.

Hey Bill,

I see the sand dabs alright but what are the fish to the right of them? Are those ocean whitefish?

Thats awfully far north for those babies, who knows, maybe yellowtail and more white seabass to come soon? i think we should be coming upon another el nino soon and thay will make prime fishing if it goes as planned.

Amazing, if those are ocean whitefish i need to take some time off work *cough...* and see whats out there!!

The only places i have seen ocean whitefish diving and fishing is from San Diego south to Baja and the Los Coronados islands!

Alex and Doug -

Mike and I did the red buoy to yellow can loop out of MBK on 9/1 and had about the same results as you had on 9/2. 15 small to medium rock fish with 15 sand dabs. No big red fish or lings. I did pick up a very large copper on an 8 inch twin tail motor oil scampi on a 4 ounce jig head about 1/4 mile south of the yellow can on the way back to MBK. There was a lot of structure and fish at about 60 FOW, but we had trouble fishing it because the wind had really picked up and the drift was fast even with the dift chute deployed. Let me know if you are going out on 9/10.

Hey Johnguinepig,

Yes those are Ocean whitefish. I was surprise to catch one of those baby's while fishing for sanddabs in 100~140ft.

I actually went out on Monday just to see if i could hook into them again and caught those two in the pic with all the sanddabs.

I never tasted them till this past weekend and they are very tasty. The meat is like white seabass. Nice and moist. :smt001

If you go out and fish for them while there around. I caught mine using strips of squid on the dropshot set up.

off the bottom. Doug read the reg's on them for size limit and bag limit he said there was no size limit and they count against your rock cod limit since they fall under the RCG. I have to check just to make sure.

wow, that sure is nice, down in baja we would filet it and chop it up into cubes, then throw them in a plate and add some sesame oil and soy sauce. then eat as a snack raw. nothing fishy about it at all and it was good.

next time i go out to MB i sure wouldl ike to see if I could get one. down in Los Coronados Islands off of Tijuana I was freediving and saw schools of them around 20-25 inches appx in length. for some reason i just could not get close enough for a shot at them.

then after an hour or so i was laying at the bottom on a slab of rock and saw one go shaking over me just within range.

those fish are great.

one of my favorite fish are calicos to eat but i sure would rather have a whitefish since i eat them so rarely.

Nice whitefish. You can catch a boatload of them in SoCal.

The big eyed cabezon looking fish is a Buffalo Sculpin. I've caught soccer ball sized fish (yep the tummy was fat and round) up in Northern Marin.
