It's always cool to hear of others that metal detect.  My buddy Dave (NWKA DTS) and I hit the dirt in the fall winter and early spring while the soil is easiest to dig and less harm done to the grass.

I've found several gold and silver rings, and 7 coins from the 1800's up here Oregon.  12 silver coins, the oldest is from 1859.  A zillion Wheat pennies, and ton of other odds and ends.

We have been hitting this one local park off and on for 15 years with hardly any scratch to show for it.
In the past two weeks the ground gods are finally giving up some goodies.  We both have found old pocket knives deep from around the 1930's.  Both of us have found a '43 Mercury dime each.  He has found 2 Wheat pennies, and I have found 9.   We plan to milk this park hard till the dirt gets dry, then it's time to focus on kayak fishing.

I have a buddy who does. He is freaking hooked!! Goes out almost every day and does well. At this pace he will pay for his $300 detector in a few months...

I have always wanted to do some metal detecting. So my question is whats a good detector to get? One that might get submerged in water but not more than a few feet. Doesn't have to be the best but good.

reelfish,

Underwater and beach stuff can be handled by Tesoro Sand Shark (PI) or Tiger Shark (VLF). They're both good units. I'm not a coin/ring/water hunter, so my knowledge pretty much ends there. I have a friend with a Tiger Shark and that unit can also do some reasonably capable gold prospecting on land as well.

The other companies (Whites etc.) have water units as well.

And many dry-land type detectors can get the lower part (coil) wet without a problem for at least fringe water type work.
I think I would lean toward a sealed water-proof unit in case you fell in the stream or surf though.

I have a cheap detector right now. I was going to buy the Garrett AT Pro but I bought my kayak instead. But when I do buy a detector I'm getting the Garrett AT Pro.

I have four. Minelab 5400, Fisher Goldbug 2, Whites somethin or other, and a Garret wand. Detecting is fun, and can be rewarding. I live in town, and it is cool to see whats buried in your yard!

Thats the problem with telling other people. The IRS should have no business taking that much.

now they might do jail time for not reporting it for a year, and the gov. Could take it all.

They should not have told anyone about finding those coins. They should have sold a few and buried the rest in their yard.
