The neighborhood roof rats have been eating the oranges from our tree just as the sugars are starting to develop.  I shot and killed one with a red rider bb gun but it's just not strong enough.  Tonight I was shooting a fat one in the tree and it finally jumped from my tree into my neighbor's yard.

What is a good weapon for killing rats from ~20' away?  I plan on getting a .22 rifle in the near future, should I just get it now and search for subsonic ammo?  I don't want stray bullets raining on/in my neighbors' homes.  What's a good quiet pellet gun?

Thanks,
Nate

I just looked for an e-mail I got from midway USA. they had rebuilt break barrel pellet rifles for about 60.00. It wasn't a pump type. As you can buy those new for 60.00 everyday. Something changed in my e-mail settings and the trash dumps everyday now. Sorry you might call them. The break barrel pellets rifles are great and can be as powerful as a 22.

Take  fallen oranges, partly open them and stuff lots of rat or ground squirrel pellets inside the sections. Put up high like in a gutter or somewhat the rats travel.  Let them eat those oranges

.177 Gamo whisperer, very effective and quiet, we use it in a urban setting with great results.

Use this. Cheap but awesome BB gun.

That's an awesome Pellet rifle.  I have a mid -70s' one. The only thing to go bad was the O-ring to seal the chamber.  Accurate as all get out.

Thats the one I use. I have a Benjamin .22 392 multi pump rifle that would destroy a rat. The gun has a report though. My buddy has the Benji Trail NP (single pump break barrel)and it is very quite in comparison. Many of the new guns have built in cans or baffles to lessen the noise, something you might want for an urban setting.

All the .177 gamos I've owned are pretty accurate with an aftermarket scope, and not too expensive. Using lead in keeps the pellets subsonic so very quiet, especially with hollow points. Can get more velocity with Pba or denser metals but then it's more loud but just as effective as a regular .22

Man, I can totally relate.  I was doing nightly ops to my backyard when they were raiding my almond trees.  Over the course of a week, I dropped 3 with my bb gun (big fat bastards too!), but they kept on coming.  I eventually had no choice but to put out the DCON.  That took care of them for a while, but even then they eventually came back.
