I'd appreciate some pointers on trolling worms (crawlers) for trout.  Never done it before.

Peaked my interest when I saw a guy a float tube do real well doing this.

Thanks,

I use Seps micro flashers and 18" leader. Thread the worm on the hook and up the line using a worm threader. Sometimes a dodger and worm 18" behind dodger, still threaded.

Do you add some weight to keep it down?

it would go as deep as anything else would.  depends on how deep the trout are.

I am targeting between Surface to 20 feet down. I don't have a downrigger.

generally flashers and dodgers will give you a little extra depth.  If you want to go deeper you'll need to drop back more line, leadcore or a diver of some sort.

Dodger and flashers are what I got to for the lower elevation lakes. When I troll for Macks and want more depth (I usually get between 20-30') I got with a 2oz torpedo wight with eyes on both ends. I tie it on and put a 24-30in leader and tie on what I intent to fish with. The set up has worked great for me.

Trolling a night crawler with dodger, behind a Jet Diver, worked for me.  The Jet Diver should get you down between 10-50 feet easy depending on the model you're using.  http://www.rapala.com/Jet-Diver/Jet%20Diver,default,pd.html

I'll add a couple of large splitshot (about 1/2 oz of weight) a foot or two above a dodger to get some additional depth.  Depending on how much line you put out, you can easily reach 20-30 foot depths.  The thing with dodgers is that they require you to go verrry slow.  You want the dodger to sway side-to-side in the water as you move.  If the dodger is spinning in the water, then you're going too fast.  Recognize the pump-pump action the dodger will give your rod tip.  That way you can tell that your dodger's working properly when you're trolling.  The last thing you want is to troll for an hour, then reel up only to see your worm/dodger rig is all tangled up.

Trolling's about the last thing I like to employ when fishing trout, but when I do choose to troll, a 1/2 nightcrawler about 18 inches behind a dodger is hard to beat.  The classic Ford Fender flasher setup can also work really well.

A keel weight works best for me to get some depth, I carry 1/2, 5/8 & 3/4 oz., they clip directly onto your flasher. the bead chain prevents line twist problems.
Remember to practice safe knots, because big fish don't just break your line, they also break your heart.

030 Jet Diver and wedding ring with night crawler threaded on the hook works great at Melone and Don Pedro.

Like fish educator said above a keel weight works great to get down a few feet. The more line let out the further down the lure will go also depends on speed. Just make sure it has bead chain or else you will have a line mess on your hands
