Very slow fishing for me at Shaver Lake yesterday. I tried every lure in my tackle box for very little return. Between 8 am and 12 noon I had zero action. Not even a bite. Finally around noon I missed a bite, then a while later my lines somehow got tangled up and in sorting them out I felt and missed another bite. Finally after redeploying the lines I got one that stuck which turned out to be an 11" kokanee. I decided to CPR him only to realize later his mouth was open, so I couldn't even use the pic for AOTY :(
On the way back to the ramp I passed two guys in a boat who said they had three trout between the two of them, one of which was trophy sized. They were slow trolling night crawlers. In my year of kayak trout fishing, night crawlers are one of the few presentation I haven't tried. Since I have my own red worms, I made a mental note to make some worm trolling harnesses for next time. Anyone have any recommendations to make snelling hooks easier?

Well at least you got one on board.
I was  up at Bass Lake on Sunday too.   Sounds like your day...first 3 hours no bites.  last  hour i  got  4 different  strikes....but  none were hard ones and I did not even have  a fight...bite and gone by the time i got the pole.   No fish for me Sunday.
I did fish Saturday at Bass Lake too....alot better.  got 5  trout in boat. One was  just shy of 18"...nice trout.   Several other bites.

All my fish got with a  dodger and night crawlers.  I tried  the  different  F7 Rapapla's  that were successful up there a few weeks  ago....not  even 1 bite this time !!

Good times, good weather, no complaints.
Been wanting to try Shaver...soon perhaps !

How did you rig your night crawlers? Threaded on the line with 1 hook, or hooked twice with two different hooks? How far from the dodger?

Thanks!

Matt

Thread the worms on 1 hook with worm threaded...you can seen them plunged in to the foam.  Small hook. Hook about 20"  from dodger....I had been less than that before and did well.  My dodger was about 4" long.
There was a guest lecture  guy in Sacramento at the ISE sporting event.  Forget his name...sorry.  He said for Kokanee, he only puts hook about 2 lengths of the length of the dodger...  In this case, about 8 inches from dodger.  Of course this is trout, not Kokanee , but I think it could be the same or close.  At 10" I did fine.  Not use why I tied this one at 20"

Thanks! When I use hoochies with dodgers they are on short leaders so the dodger can impart action on the hoochie and I have caught trout and kokanee that way but was not sure about night crawlers. ..

I was at Bass too. saw MM. I fished off the bank Sat cuz my inlaws likes that. We got two trout soaking power bait. Then Sun we 3 were out on the water. Broinlaw has a bad wing and we left after about 2-3 hours...not happy time for me...I got zero bites trying to hook up on a bass, sisinlaw said she got a bite. Not a good weekend for me.

I went to a local lake above Santa Barbara. Got two in about 7 hours. We have had a full moon and I really think that was the main problem. So it wasn't just the two lake you mentioned. The Marina said all fishing was very slow.

Intetesting that all 3 of us had bad fishing on Sunday. When I was leaving shaver I briefly chatted with a couple characters who were fishing around the coutesy dock. None of them had caught any fish either. I helped a lady retrieve a lure that broke off when she cast it--a turqoise blue crankbait. She said the fishing from the docks was excellent for 2 weeks after the trophy plant. It made me wonder if she caught any trout on that crankbait.

So now viti I have to go up there, For CCKF AOTY tourney points. You just passed me. I'm going to watch the moon and plant. Funny how few have entered the AOTY with a great prize. I'm sure when rock fish opens it will grow.

must be that the "after a rain front moves in the fishing is no good" rumor Ive read about is true. During the rain and pre-rain is good, but not right after...must be it.
