looking at FF for my OK T-13 ...seen on the threads about different models i.e. Humminbirds 386ci ,597  ..however being new to this what might be applicable ,downward imaging or side imaging  does it matter or is it specific to type of fishing salt or fresh  :smt017 ...Thanks for the patience with the NOOB question..meanwhile i`ll be off reading threads... :study:  oh and I understand GPS is a MUST

I have the 596cHD.  I like it.  I rarely use the DI function.  The mode I use 99% of the time is the wide beam with the switch fire mode on the screen.  If I am looking for structure I will use the narrow beam.  Don't know anything about side scan, so can't speak to that.
Edibility is a state of mind.....you can eat it if you don't mind.

Not many kayakers use the side scan function. And I would only get a DI or DSI model if it was specifically for freshwater use. Because those transducers operate at a frequency that provides subpar results in saltwater. Just my opinion.
