I had an idea I thought was worth posting up. I'm not sure where it belongs so I put it here. I would like to suggest we ask tournament winners to do a hookup and demonstrate their winning techniques for interested members. They could show the lure or bait and method used to catch the winning fish. I'm not suggesting it be mandatory. Just a nice way to pay it forward or give back. The hookup could be at the tournament location or any similar spot that was convientent. It could be open to the public, members only or restricted to tournament attendees. It could be held anytime in the year following the tournament win. What do you think? Good idea, or not?

If you see who wins, ask them for advise. Most of us will give pointers out whenever asked. You will get better intel if you PM that person instead of putting it out in the open.

I really like this idea. But I don't think many people would be ok with sharing their secrets openly. I have pm'd a few people to ask specifics and most were willing to share privately.

I would expect a desire to keep secret spots private. Lure selection and rigging etc seems less secret. A live demonstration on the water seems more helpful than a PM discussion or a seminar. It seems difficult to do at the event since everyone is busy chillin afterwards. Of course there are classes and seminars given by dealers etc. I see a benefit from learning from someone that has proven success with a specific method at a specific location. As I said before, not mandatory. With the give the shirt off my back helpful attitude I see everyday within this group, I would be surprised if most winners would not want to give out a few tips and tricks. It seems more difficult to get info and intel comming up to an event. I understand that it is a competition and no one wants to lose because they gave away a tip. As I said it is just an idea. If the competitive nature overshadows the community it would surprise me, but I understand.

I see where you're coming from, traildad - I don't think there's a reluctance to share techniques or strategies for success.  The winners of events are consistently those who are well prepared, knowledgeable of target species, and they maximize their chances for catching and retaining fish.  There's much that goes into all of that.  Anyone who wishes to achieve the level of expertise that will put you at the top of the leaderboard at a big event should focus on gathering information and practicing the craft.  To put on a seminar in overall preparedness would probably be the most useful to aspiring competitors.

I've fished and pursued other outdoors activities with hundreds of different people over the past couple of decades, and I tend to notice how long it takes others to prepare when we arrive at launch, how long it takes others to get a presentation in the water, how effectively others are rigging, deploying gear, netting or otherwise handling fish...etc.  I didn't set out to analyze those things, but having achieved a high level of proficiency myself it's natural to notice how tuned in others are.  I enjoy being OTW with beginners and seeing how they soak up information and how much they notice when others around them are consistently faster and more prepared - it's that interface that allows for improvement for all involved.  I also enjoy time out there with veterans of the sport, and, again, I am aware of their activities, speed and adeptness with gear and their boat, and I look for areas where others are surpassing my level of proficiency.  The key is focusing on your goals.  If your goals include being better prepared, assembling and deploying gear more quickly, learning as much as possible about target species, and achieving higher and higher levels of proficiency then you are on the right track to becoming a tournament contender - no seminar needed!   :smt001

Most who do well in tournaments probably fish way more than their wives want them to!!   :smt005 It's about spending the time.  :smt006

Dumb luck is always my plan... I bring everything... I toss everything... I use Bait... I use lures... If it hasn't worked in 10 min, I change it up... I buy new stuff constantly... I try the stuff I see on the internet (pro fishing vids) And sometimes I get lucky!!! So the next time you scoff at my 6 poles and 3 tackle boxes, worms, minnows, cut bait, dead shad, all piled in my lap as I paddle out to fish... remember you and a barbie pole and some worms and 2 hooks have the same chance of getting fish I do :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

I like the idea of some sort of intro to kayak fishing for the noobs.
Being new to fishing from a kayak it have learned that it is very different from fishing on the bank. I know the basics of selecting a lure, matching the hatch and lure presentation, but some things I would like to learn would be lure presentation while being constantly moving and fishing from the confined space of a kayak.

Ron, I love the comment from Mr. Bluegill!

Great stuff.
I think what Vanilla Gorilla is asking for makes sense.  Not so much the fishing aspect, but consideration about fishing from a kayak.  Like how to not go for a swim while reaching back for gear, netting a fish, and what happens on a kayak after you  get the snarling ling on board etc.

Traildad...I had the same issues when I first got into kayak fishing.  When I first started, about the only thing I knew was largemouth bass fishing and bottom fishing for   rockfish/lings.

Start off reading articles/write-ups/videos, not only on NCKA but anywhere you can find info.  Then practice those tactics you wish to get better at on the water.  Then after all this, if you still have some stuff that needs clarification, then post up on the boards and I am sure any of the experts here will be more than willing to set you in the right direction.  For the most part, the videos and write ups should help you get the basics down, then the rest is practice and time on the water.  Good luck.
If you ain't first, you're last.

I nominate sin coast to head this up! .......He can host a seminar on the famed ling leg lock  :smt003 Seriously it all comes with practice (in my case it comes slowly most times) I have never gone out with a group or just another member that I didn't learn something. My method has and is get OTW with as many members as you can. Always fun and always learn lots

Everyone here will be willing to share their thoughts and knowledge about fishing, rockfishing is open for everyone and anyone can win those event who put enough efforts. lake and spots are probably different. I used to be a freshwater fisherman but found it more frustrating so I stop. last time I shared my favorite lake this is what happen.
