Not surprising at all.  This kind of thing happens a lot at highway accidents.  Near Bradley a few years ago,  we got to watch the Battalion Chief and a CHP supervisor go round and round.  They leave the truck parked in a manner to protect the crew working on the victims.  Ten years ago, a FF got hit and killed in Soledad.  Had the engine been oriented in a manner to protect him, it would have never happened.

Another case of ego getting in the way of duty!  :smt013 I guess we were lucky when I was a firefighter. Never had any problems like that with CHP or sheriff dept. I have heard a few stories but never anything out of control like this! I'm not going to let one case of poor judgment (in MHO) change my opinion of the men and women of the CHP or Monterey county sheriff dept. Always professional while on scene and even a few jokes and banter when it was over. Just remember the one thing "cops" and firefighters have in common is that they all want to be firefighters  :smt003

CHP is ultimately in charge of any incident on a highway. They are in charge. Unfortunately that is the bottom line. Did he have to take it that far as to handcuff the Captain of that engine? No.
CHP at times can be more concerned with keeping traffic flowing than scene safety. Most of the CHP guys I've ever dealt with have been cool. It's hard to say what the people involved should have done without being there. Freeways are hands down the most dangerous place Firefighters go on calls. Clashing Ego's, scene safety, traffic flow, ect. make it hard to have an opinion on this.

Weimarian, a CalFire battalion chief wrote you a speeding ticket? Bizarre.

I don't understand why the fire dept needs to be on scene when nothing is on fire, the ambulance is there, and chp is there to deal with traffic.  From the pic it appears the crashed vehicle was off the freeway.

Not trying to be judgmental, just trying to understand why a firetruck, (or three) needed to be on the freeway.

Eric, fire engines&trucks are big and heavy enough to block the accident scene from drivers that might plow into it. That is why they park at an angle when on the freeways. To block the area and if a car does plow a fire truck it will glance off and away from the CHP and Ambulance and tow truck driver. Remember ambulances are rear-loading. Also, just because the vehicle isn't on fire at the moment doesn't mean it won't be in the short future. Fire personnel have to clear the damaged vehicle of hazards like leaking fuel and sparks that could be caused by a still connected battery. And a lot of the time, fire personnel are there to provide manpower. Getting an unconscious or injured patient up a roadside embankment isn't an easy job for an ambulance crew of 2 people. The number of trucks/engines on scene of a vehicle accident depends on the accident itself, how many people involved, how many vehicles, do they need or appear to need to be extricated ect.
