I met up with Scott Thornley on Sunday morning to fish Stillwater.  We met in Monterey and caravaned to the launch so that Scott would be sure to find it easily.  We were the first at the lauch and one kayaker and three guys with a rubber raft showed up before we hit the water.  Conditions were calm with an offshore blowing to start.  Scott and I paddled out toward the pinnacles and fished around them all morning with Scott checking in periodically with his wife to check on the status of the pending new Thornely.  The catching was good, especially for small Gofer RF of which I must have caught and released 20.  Even in different areas, I could not get away from them.  A few were not able to get back down and were victems of the seagulls and seals so I counted three against my limit.  I ended up keeping three nice blues two olives a brown and a kelp RF.  I released amoung the multiple gofers, one underling, and several blues and some smaller olives.

Scott left about 10:30 to meet up with his wife and I though I would be close behind him.  As I drifted back toward the launch, I kept seeing fish on the FF so I would drop down catch a gofer or an olive and so on and so on.  Before I knew it it was about noon time to head home, clean fish and eat lunch.  Overall a good day and good company.  I'll let Scott as his comments.  It was a pleasure to meet you Scott, let me know next time you are in the area.

No input from Scott yet?  Maybe he and his wife are welcoming a new fishing partner to the family and thus no time to report about fishing?

We're finally back in the land of the web enabled. I'm not going to pay $12 for a couple hours of broadband at the hotel.

I too was on a gopher hunt at first, then switched tactics. First thing in the morning, I had a good sized copperish colored fish literally nail my bait when the leader swivel was at my tip top. I didn't hook em, but later on, when I saw a good sized olive follow the bait all the way to the boat, I put two and two together. I could fish low, catch baby gophers and donate them to the seagulls, or I could take out the heavy trout/light bass spinning rod, and fish the kelp shallow. It was literally a fish a cast for a while. 3/8 oz jig head and transparent/silver flake was the hot combo. The quality of the fish was better, I wasn't losing gear like I was on the bottom, and a 2 1/2 pound olive on a ML spinning rod is a hoot and a half. I kept two olives, a blue, and what appeared to be a brown.

All in all, a great last day on the water for what should be a very long time. Thanks again Sackyak!

Regards,
Scott
