I'm looking at putting a nice reel on this rod. What would your choice be? I've been looking at Calcuttas, Shimano tlds, Avet sx 5.3, and a couple of the Diawas. What would make a great reel for the rod? I'm leaning toward the Avet right now? What would you do?

Fishing for kings, rockfish, halis, and whatever else I can pull out of the salt.....likely will be my main go to rod. I had a St. Croix, but it's a bit torn up right now, and I want an upgrade on the reel as well.

I don't know what kind of Trevala you bought, but I have found that it is difficult to have a rod that covers heavier jigging (rockfish/lings) with the lighter/limber action needed for halibut/salmon. There might be some crossover I'm unaware of though.

Hopefully the other can help with a good reel choice.

I run TLD's (15/20) on my beefier jigging sticks (Calstar) and  Shimano TR100/200 G's teamed with heavy and light Shimano Tritons (8 footers) rods for salmon/cal halibut/stripers. My stuff is more for general boat fishing and the serious salty kayak guys might have something better to cover all the bases.

Good luck.

That rod deserves a low profile reel. Shimano curado 300ej will not leave you too broke and compliment the trevala nicely. Make sure to clean after each salt trip. The tld's are clunky and sit too high. With a low profile reel you will have better control of the rod. Good luck and have fun.

any Abu Revo, though the inshore is best in the salt.  Just rince well after each use.  I like them for the light weight and 20# drag :)

I'm glad to see this topic as I'm in somewhat of the same boat.  I have a pair of Calcutta 400B reels and was looking to pic up two Shimano Trevala 7' one piece Medium Light rods to go with them for jigging irons and swimbaits off the coast.  They are rated up to about 4.75oz so they should fit my needs perfectly.  Hopefully they'll match up well with the Calcutta 400 reels!

I agree w/ Craig!
It's a super light rod, why do you wanna put a heavy reel to make it heavier (light performance racing car w/ a big dude!? they need Danica Patrick!)!?
I got Ashley 7ML w/ Revo NaCl 60HS.
She likes it but it still looks bigger on the rod...

I prefer the daiwa lexa 300 power handle model on my rods had some issues with the curado 300ej but it was a good reel while it lasted. Daiwa is also only 150$ online so it hurts a little less if u yardsell it

+1 curado 300s would be the way to go
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

Trevala S paired with the Curado 300 is a great match jigging 2oz swim bait for rockfish. :smt002. JMHO

May not be as accomplished as some who have posted but having both rods and reels I still prefer the Avet over the Curado. Seems to pivot easier a big plus on  long days.

+1.  It's worth the money.  Smooth and stout reel for its size.

Be sure to check out the Okuma Komodo 350 size low profile . Stainless steel gears and lots of drag, 25lbs I think. Built for saltwater and heavy freshwater use with good line capacity. The Daiwa lexa and curado 300 are good choices too.

maybe its just me, but the revo inshore seems a bit fragile compared to the calcuttas.  I treat them the same but the revo always seems to have issues while the calcuttas just keep on ticking.
