I know the answer is probably more than likely a resounding "no"; however, I have reason to believe that fishing may be allowed at Niles Canyon. I have done my research online and have found conflicting information. Some sources say you can fish it, while others say you cannot. Perhaps, the surefire way would be to call the DFW and find out for sure. Here is what I found:

Sources that say fishing is allowed:

Sources that give me reason to believe that fishing is NOT allowed:

Types of fish in Niles Canyon/Upper Alameda Creek:

...and of course they got steelhead and salmon, or at least they used to, but I'm not trying to target endangered species. I just want to see if fishing is allowed for planter trout and largemout/smallmouth bass.

Whatever glimmering hope I have of fishing there would be nice because it's essentially my backyard. How sad that dams destroyed the thriving steelhead and coho salmon populations. Heard people used to slay steelhead and salmon up until the 60's or so. Imagine that! I'm so bummed because we'd have large populations of salmon and steelhead available to fish for locally all over the Bay Area.

I'm pretty sure the only substantial unendangered fish population in the creek are carp and pikeminnow anyhow, for the most part.  For bass a better bet would be the various ponds.

Fished there all my life. Parking there is the issue. They also use to plant Niles Canyon on a regular bases. Is it posted no Fishing? Of course use to use live bait at Del Valle now everyone says its illegal.

They stopped planting trout in Alameda Ck years ago. Probably a short time after that youtube video was filmed...

My neighbors yard across the street has access to the secret sidewalk and creek.  When/if the fish come back it's on.

Many of the dams and weirs have been removed within recent years, hopefully not too late.

Secret Sidewalk! Awesome.  I used to catch little planters there in the late 80's and 90's. Lots of homeless living down there now as well.

Gosh haven't heard about fish in Alameda creek in decades. Last time I fished it was when I was a kid in the 70's. Trout used to be stocked in it and it was fun to go ride my bike to the creek and catch a lot of them.

I have some stories about the secret sidewalk that should not be public. There would/could be steelhead in there right now. Caltrans got popped for a lane widening near the bridge on the Fremont side. They were stripping out trees and someone was able to document steelhead and they shut em down?

Grew up in that creek,  my cousin and I used to forage all kinds of kool things in our younger days…  from the canyon all the way to Coyote;;

One of the weirdest animals was the amazing amount of lampreys in there and I bet they still are…   :smt106

Yea Frank, bell bottoms were in and pissing in the forest was cool. But those were fun times to grow up in.
My best friend one day hooked into a nice steelhead right under the first bridge on 84 one time and it took him for all it was worth to get it close. It finally won the battle and broke off. I've seen a lot of them in there when I was growing up and my friends did too.

I also read a book written in the 20's about how good steelhead fishing used to be in Alameda Creek. To bad it is a cesspool now and it hasn't been taken care of.

Stephen, Before the aqueduct for flood control that was a great area for wild life but no one wanted to live on stilted houses anymore. Unfortunately Niles Canyon took a big hit in its free flow for Steel Head. People think I'm nuts when I say Steelhead and Niles Canyon in the same sentence.
Still walk my dogs in the area but further west near Shinns and Quarry.
