Love the initial shock as Yakin Aggie went in. I've done that a few times and you never can get used to hitting the water.

He appears to be wearing a radio.  I wonder why it wasn't on.  Monitoring 16 he would have known that the CG had been called and saved them the effort.

Gonna be a bit critical here.

If you don't have enough familiarity with the sport to reenter you kayak without making a big deal of it, and you are still making lots of poor decisions about conditions and safety...

Perhaps it's good to wait a bit before you make instructional videos.
Always willing to join others in the Monterey/Santa Cruz/Half Moon Bay area for a bit of fishing...feel free to contact me.

I agree, Paul.  Oddly, and ufortunately, IMO, the sport is so young and so automatically associated with some level of adrenalin seeking that bravado / foolishness is seen as the cutting edge by some.

I saw the videos when they come out. Really bad judgement all around. In NCAL it might have cost him his life. In Texas, it just a bad hair day. The NORCAL Pacific ocean is unforgiving. If I did something that stupid, I would expect that you all would be ragging on me as well as my wife and family.

Heck, I caught a bigger shark here off of the main channel for the navy base and it only took 15 minutes.  And I would not have been stupid enough to go out in bad seas.  To me he was a bonehead wannabe yaker, no common sense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I've got some Newbie questions after watching this video...

1.  what's the advantage of a paddling at launch when he has the Mirage drive?  Wouldn't pedaling be more efficient and faster?

2.  never caught a shark or released anything that big/potentially dangerous before.  I thought that was the point of barbless hooks... to ease the release.  Also, if using big barbed hooks, I was told to snip the barbs then pull the hook when releasing.

Someone school me on all this.

When you launch, you do not normally have the drive in place due to the possibility of yard sales (rolling yak) and thereby crunching your drive as the wave rolls you over.

You are right - ease of release.  You could just pinch the barb down with a plier, if you snip - you might leave some of the barb sticking up, then you would still have to pinch that piece down.
