So, did I tell you about that time when the skunks were sniffing my brother's face?!

You guys are funny.  We need a classic Shelter Cove tale to lighten the moment and clear the smoke!   :smt005

Years ago - probably the mid to late nineties - my family had a reunion down at the Cove.  Several of us were staying at the campground, and others were in local inns and hotels.  It was late around the campfire, near the NW corner on the inside, and my buddy Mark and I were enjoying the embers of the fire.  We were buzzed out and enjoying it, and my brother had already turned in - electing to crash with a sleeping bag right on the ground next to the fire.

So he's snoozing away on the far side of the fire from us, and we see something approach him.  My first instinct is to raise my voice, get his attention, and warn him of danger, but as the critter is right next to his face I refrain from speaking out.  Mark and I can now clearly see that it's a skunk that is sniffing my brother's face!  We sit there across the fire from this crazy scene, trying to hold back the chuckles.  We sat there busting up silently for a minute as the skunk literally sniffed my brother's face several times, then it moved along.

The campground seems to have undergone several generational changes over the past 20 years and more, with possums, deer, raccoons and sometimes bears taking turns as the dominant critters of the camp.  So be ready for anything.   :smt001

Who has a picture of one of those bears in the campground??  I never actually saw it, despite people left and right of me spotting and shouting, even throwing things at them.  Anyone have a portable electric fence???  :smt003

Here ya go.  Bugger grabbed my bag of trailmix from a picnic table, ran off with it just beyond the fence, and proceeded to eat the entire thing right before our eyes.

He seemed to become more bold as the week progressed, showing up earlier and earlier in the night.  By Saturday night, he showed up when it was still light out!  I'm taking extra precautions this time around.  That bear had almost no fear of people.

If you see this woman in the campground, be nice to her and maybe offer her a beer.

Her name is Sam and she has been very welcoming to us for the past 4 years. Has brought us crabs, salmon and just an all around good person.

That's awesome. I mistook another woman for her at Ocean cove during the A-hull hookup a few weeks ago.

LOL!

Sam's awesome. 2 or 3 years ago I got there hella early and it was pretty much just me, zilla, cnew83 and her chilling in the back corner for a few days. Cool to get to know someone who lives up there all year round...

Last year I'm pretty sure it was her who TPd my tent after I "fell asleep" early on the last night.

Jim
