Format review for GS8:

AOTD goes to highest scoring angler with points per inch for salmon, halibut, lingcod (5 points/inch each), rockfish and cabs (7 points/inch) and greenling (11 I think...).  AOTD receives a new Malibu X-Caliber fishing kayak.

C&R bonus with photo on trough containing element to be announced Friday evening before the tourney.  Bonus only awarded if you didn't keep a bigger fish of that species (honor system).  Bonus equals one point per inch of the released fish.  Release the 30" lingcod that was your largest of the day, get the required photo with element, get 150 points at 5 points/inch PLUS 30 bonus points.

SOTD - Sportsman of the Day has the highest C&R-only score (CAN keep salmon and/or halibut as there are no C&R bonuses for those species).  SOTD gets a new Kokatat drysuit.

Longest lingcod, either measured at check-in or clearly represented in the photo with element, receives a Wilderness Systems T140.

AOTD can be SOTD, but AOTD cannot win longest lingcod -  it's one or the other.

Longest lingcod CAN win SOTD.

Other prizes/donated art/gear...etc. go in a silent auction to be held at the potluck, and all proceeds go to HOW and PIF - two charitable groups well represented within NCKA.

Trophies:  10" abalone with custom artsy 'tag' for AOTD, SOTD, Longest Lingcod and maybe big salmon.  Redwood Trophy Trough to AOTD.  Other custom work TBA.

The main point of Gimme Shelter:  gather with good friends to enjoy a spectacular section of the Nor Cal coast.

To clarify, if someone wins AOTD and catches the largest lingcod--they can't take home both kayaks.
BUT can they choose which kayak/category...e.g., that person chooses the largest lingcod prize (T140), so the AOTD prize (Malibu X-calibur) would then go to whoever was 2nd in AOTD?

Good catch. That leaves room for some serious shenanigans. The choice should have to be made prior to the event.  The easiest is probably to say that AOTD must take the xcal.

Good catch. That leaves room for some serious shenanigans. The choice should have to be made prior to the event.  The easiest is probably to say that AOTD must take the xcal.

Enlighten me on these 'serious shenanigans' - I'm naive about such things!   :smt005

I see it like this:  IF someone wins AOTD and ALSO had the longest lingcod that person would have to decide whether they're AOTD or not - if they deny the title then they get the WS T140, and whoever had second place in the AOTD points would win the Grand Prize Malibu X-Caliber.  In effect, the longest lingcod winner would be precluded from winning AOTD by claiming longest lingcod.  The other side of the coin is IF somone wins AOTD and ALSO had the longest lingcod and they stuck with the AOTD title (more likely due to prestige and a few more trophies, I'd say) then the second longest lingcod would win the T140.

After writing that I can see that a possible situation could develop where a participant chose which prize they wanted based on who would get the one they didn't take...  I'll be considering this.

It's already the case that I'm 90% sure I won't have everyone on a scoreboard this year.  As much as I loved making the scoreboards and having everyone's name and many reported catches up on the boards, it's too much work and eats way too much time and energy during scoring.  Instead, I'll be overseeing the scoring process and collecting all completed scorecards.  I'll keep them in order of highest score, and I'll keep notes on longest lingcod and catch and release only scores.  So the status of the scoring will be concealed until the awards, but anyone hanging around the scoring will likely have an idea of who the leaders are.  Sounds like I may need to be ready to ask high scorers which title they'd want if they end up with highest score AND longest lingcod...

Open to ideas here, but I'm not worried about it.  It'll be good.

This.  Exactly this.  Money could even trade hands.  It should be predetermined so this doesn't happen.

Also, I really like the board.  I'm willing to help with the board if I can haul my smoker to the dinner site so I can tend it.

BOARD?  I BARELY fit all the names on two 4x8 sheets LAST year!!   :smt005

I must take the advice of my lawyer...  My NO Man!   :smt001

OK - You're on, Doug.  You are the board tender.  I'll buy the boards, line them out, fill in all the names and put the cool little fish icons on there.  You fill in the scores from the sheets I'll provide.

To remedy the bigger issue, I'll be considering my options...  For now I'll say that everyone must accept AOTD if their score is highest.  Since someone may wait in the wings near scoring in order to manipulate the winners based on how they see it stacking up, I do want to keep the scoreboards concealed until they're completed.

I'll be giving this much thought.  Thanks for the assistance.

I thought on this, and I feel that I have a good grasp on where someone could possibly try to cheat the system.  On top of this, I feel that the spirit of the event is very high, and it's unlikely someone will try to manipulate the system.  (not to mention unlikely that the AOTD would have the longest lingcod, but I do like having a lawyer and NO Man   :smt001)

This is the rule:  If you try to manipulate the score in any way you are subject to immediate disqualification.  Scores turned in are final and are expected to be accurate and complete.

If someone has the wherewithal to work out a deal in the face of that and a concealed scoreboard then it's beyond my tracking abilities and desires.

Issue solved.   :smt001
