We will be camping on the coast this weekend and I am going to try poke poling. I am a newbie to fishing and have not fished salt water before. Poke poling focuses on Monkey Face Eels but I have read that rock fish, including Cabezon and even Lings, can also be caught.
I have been reading the regulations to make sure I don't do anything wrong, but want to confirm with you experienced people I have it right. From my reading, No season on MFE's. Rock fish season has ended for anglers on boats, but it is still legal to catch them if shore fishing. If I do catch a Ling, it has to be 22" minimum. And the limit for all catch combined is 10 fish.
Does this sound right? Am I missing anything? Thanks for your help.

Almost got it. BAg limit is same as "in season."  10 rockfish in combination.  tow cabezon limit count towards bag limit.  Two lingcod limit, above and beyond the 10 bag limit.  Lings 22".  Cabs 15".  MFE's someone else wil have to chme in.  I am not sure of any bag limit of size limit.

Check the CA regs booklet, available online.

You're very close.  There's a 10-fish limit for the "RCG complex" (rockfish, cabezon, greenling).  So any rockfish, cabezon, or greenling you keep contribute to that 10-fish limit.  No more than 3 of those fish can be cabezon, minimum size limit of 15 inches.  Any greenling you keep (kelp, rock, etc) must be at least 12 inches to keep.

Lingcod fall into a separate 2-fish limit (with the 22" minimum size, like you mentioned).  Monkeyface pricklebacks (aka, monkeyface eels) fall under the "general finfish" category, so you can keep 10 of those.

Hypothetically, you could go out there and catch 10 rockfish/greenling/cabezon (with no more than 3 cabezon as part of that limit), two lings, and a mess of 10 MFEs and you'd be legal.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but that's how the regulations read.  That'd be a shitload of fish!

With no more than a cumulative 20 fish, right?

Thanks for the clarification. I have been reading the regs but they can be a bit confusing. I understand poke poling has a big learning curve so doubt I will need to worry about limits. And even if I do get beginner's luck, I'm the type to only keep what I will eat while it is fresh. I'll be happy with one or two MFE's, but a rock fish would be a bonus just so I can taste one.

Be careful around the rocks this weekend -- there's new swell on the way.

Thanks for the heads up, chopper. Since I'm new to the coastal thing, I'll try to find more protected locations like some coves.
