History: I have been using a rice cooker for decades, but previously always with only white rice.  At the
direction of my dietician, I have begun mixing in 1/2 brown rice for my health.

Problem: My rice cooker keeps overflowing a bunch. I have reduced the volume of rice and water, but it still does it.

Recipe: With white rice it was about 3 cups rice and water depth is a pinky finger knuckle deep above it.

With the blend, I use about 1/4 less rice and 2/3 of a knuckle of water. It overflows all over the counter. I am learning to like the blend, but hate the mess!

Anyone else encountered and solved this?

With white rice I usually to a 1:1 cup ratio, with brown rice I do a 1:2 cup of water ratio. I don't know about mixing though.

Try reducing the amount of brown rice? Maybe the brown rice tends to expand more with water absorption than white rice does?

As for the original problem, are you rinsing the rice?  It will reduce the starch in the liquid.  The starch thickens the liquid and causes it to bubble and overflow.

our rice cooker allows us to use the same 1:1 ratio for brown rice. But every rice cooker is different. It might be best to cook the white rice and brown rice separately and mix it when you're ready to eat. Here is a link for how to make the brown rice in the rice cooker.

I just do what my Thai mother in law does. We use jasmine rice, I don't know if that matters.

A rice cooker "cup" makes a ration of 3/4 cup rice to 1 cup water.  But yeah, jasmine rice is usually cooker drier.

Ahh, good point! I have not been rinsing the blend. With all white Calrose, I don't rinse unless it seems like it has extra dust...I willtry the rinsing on the blend. Thanks, guys!

my wife tried that, my kids were like .."What"...they`ll at least eat brown rice...they`re not sure about quinoa..lol

At first I was like ... "that crap is bird seed!" ... But now I love the stuff and use it as a rice substitute

try this after rinsing and adding the water let the rice soak for 20min before turning on the rice cooker.

I just mix the brown and white half and half, sometimes 1 cup each, up to 2 cups each if i need to. Then I rinse 2-3 times. I use the same ratio as if I were making white rice, about 1 1/4 cup water to 1 cup rice. I don't know if its your rice cooker that is making it overflow, that could be the difference. I use the zojirushi brand which is kind of a higher end rice cooker that is awesome, but I also have a $30 oster that has worked great for years. Good luck!

Try cooking it in a pot on the stove top and see if the mixture boils over

Usually the pot has lines to fill the wAter to based on the amount of rice. When using a pot I use the mooch little finger measuring technique. My kids were home over the holidays and I made some hainanese chicken rice in a pot and they were amazed that you could make rice without a cooker.  :smt005
