I am currently working on losing a shit load of weight by GS8 for sure! I have been doing pretty good so far but defintely need to get more exercise into the program. I found all the yard crash I was doing moving yards of dirt and rock around was great for strength but now I need to get to the gym. One thing I have found to help curb a lot of appetite and help block fat from getting in the body is Garcinia Cambogia. This stuff seems to work great and do not seem to find any side effects from using it. I researched it and could not find any bad reviews on this and will continue using this daily. Eating hard boiled eggs for breakfast daily and trying to cut out eating carbs (can't quite give up my coors light carbs :smt005 ). Good luck everyone and get a plan and try to stick too it!

Then we can blow it out the window at the GS8 buffet!  :smt005

I don't think supplements are necessary for losing weight, but if you have something that works for you, even if its just a placebo effect, there is probably no harm in it.  I take several supplements but none are for weight loss or for strength gains, just for digestive health.

Obviously smashing the GS8 buffet.  Shelter Cove is a sort of undocumented and undocumentable place, and it shouldn't be attempted.  Obviously.  Leave the clipboard at home that weekend.  Any weigh-ins will be before the buffet, anything else would be cruel.

There is nothing wrong with a planned indulgence every now and then when you are trying to lose weight.  If you are trying to maintain 2000 calories a day for example, you can go ahead and have a 3.5k calorie day, just even out the week so its at 14k.

SMR:

This is a great primer on SMR for the beginner, using a foam roller.

I love love love this set of exercises, I do it nearly every morning:

The guy in that video eats a lot.  He could also break you in half.  There isn't any need to be that big unless you really want to.

If you mess around with the IFcalc here:  http://www.1percentedge.com/ifcalc/

You can be at your goal by Halloween if you eat 2200 calories a day.  I can help craft a diet if you like, that is a little more than what I eat per day.

You can also use the Basal metabolic rate (BMR) calculator here:  http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ and mess around with it to see what you can do on what kind of caloric deficit.

Or My Fitness Pal will do it for you.

I'm probably going to sound like a broken record at some point, but I don't think that "healthy eating" while on a caloric deficit means anything other than getting sufficient protein to maintain lean body mass while staying at your target deficit.  You don't need organic, non-GMO, Monsanto free vegan granola to lose weight.  You can eat McDonalds for 3 months straight and lose 37 lbs.  You can eat subway sandwiches and make millions selling the advertisements for them.  You don't have to eat what some consider "healthy" food to lose weight.  You might chose to limit or avoid GMOs and eat organic for other reasons, but it won't be for weight loss or strength because they aren't necessary for that.

I like this thread,  I have an Army PT test this weekend I have been gearing up for. I should Max my push ups (58 at age 49), do okay with sit ups (my goal is is 45), and pass my 2.5 mile walk in uder 31 minutes (my PB has been 28.50 two years ago),  I have 38 minutes to do it in.  I really want to drop under 200 LBS.  I put on some weight while back east for Christmas (damn clam cakes were really tasty!  So were the fried scallops).  Stuff like this will get me more motivated, but my real goal is to get back on my bike and build up to a point where I can ride to work and back daily.

Awesome!  How far is the ride to work?  Hills?  The best way to build up to riding a bike over hills and distance is to get on your bike and ride it up hills and for distance :)

I'm a big fan of pushups and chinups.  Situps are an outdated exercise and are not good for your spine.  The spine isn't meant to flex.  Think of it more like a credit card, where bending it at the same place repeatedly makes it weaker, not stronger.  There are better ways to develop abdominal strength.

I agree with Mark Rippetoe on this subject.  Check out this Major's thoughts on the subject:  http://startingstrength.com/articles/combat_worst_case_whittemore.pdf

Some day I hope that the armed forces focus less on calisthenics and more on strength.  The days of long forced marches required in modern warfare are few and far between, but plenty of people get their ass kicked because they fight someone stronger than themselves.  Getting people to bench press their body weight, squat 1.5x body weight and dead lift 2x their body weight would make for a reasonably strong fighting force.  I'd add in neck strengthening exercises too.  Boxers train with neck harnesses and heavy weights for neck lifts for a good reason - you are harder to knock out if you have a strong neck.

In!
Will wait for your posts on 6 basic lifts and links to SMR.
Don't know how it will be an issue but I follow the Hallelujah Diet (http://www.hacres.com/hallelujah-diet/typical-day), don't eat meat but do eat sea foods (fish, crabs, shrimps).

Sweet!

I linked my favorite youtube instructional video on SMR above.  I'll have to go back and provide a concise link list in the top post on page one so this stuff doesn't get buried in here.

As for the hallelujah diet, my only concern is that you would not get sufficient protein to build lean body mass.  Vegan diets like these, increasingly popular since the movie Forks over Knives came out, are really difficult to build strength on although it is certainly possible.  The main examples were prominently placed in the movie.  Supplementing with fish and shellfish is a perfect way to get protein for strength gains.  I think there are plant based protein supplements available too but I'm really not into dietary supplements and don't really know for sure.  Most protein supplements contain whey.  You can get plant proteins from texturized vegetable protein but that is soy and I don't think allowed on the diet.  You can also eat seitan, which is isolated gluten protein from wheat, but again not sure about the diet.  I did a cursory search for the nutritional content of barleymax, the proprietary supplement of the folks behind the halleluiah diet, but was unable to find anything.  I doubt that even the supplement labeled Protein #1 has sufficient amounts of protein for traditional strength training.

I'm in - need to lose the weight I gained recently from the steroid (dexamethasone) I got with the chemo.

That steroid screwed up my appetite and metabolism - I was hungry all the time and kept eating.

~170lbs now, I want to get to around 150.

Great job so far!  I find it nearly impossible to get 30g of fiber through diet.  This is the only area I supplement.  I have gastrointestinal issues that I've narrowed down to an intolerence to several short chain carbohydrates that are the most common sources of fiber.  I'm still working on that, but I have to avoid a lot of foods or my gastro tract goes completely haywire.  30g of fat is low.  I hope thats not \for any issues on doctor's orders, and if it is that you get better with weight loss and are able to go back to a more normal fat intake diet.  30g of fat is less than 20% of your daily calorie intake.  I'd probably feel starved all the time.

Right on!  Steroids are a a blessing and a curse.  I've been on and off steroids for the gastro issues for years.

Both of you guys should give the weight lifting a go.  Its good to be stronger.   :smt045
