I am more lost now than ever.

I just hate using the "sportstraps" on long trips on the freeway.  I feel like they will just come loose one day. but using ratchet straps was not recommended by the dealer, because I could overtighten them, but i will do what i have to, to get to sawmill lake and a few others.

I use both types of straps to secure my yak on the lumber rack. Just make sure you don't over-tighten the ratchets. And try not to strap them directly over the scuppers or anywhere else that m/b susceptible to cracking.

Those boats look impressive but the main reason I got into kayaking was because of ease of loading/unloading.

Maybe pick up a lighter, easy-loading kayak for quick trips, and save the Hobie for special occasions?

What type of wheels are you using?  When I drag up my kayak full of ab gear and fishing gear it is a load for sure but at least it is much easier with a nice set balloon tires Roleez nothing compares to hauling up a big load then the use of those tires 

If kayaks keep getting any heavier we're going to have to start installing pulley systems to load/unload.

I was thinking I could always haul it to the parking lot and toss my little wheel cart on there and wheel it where ever I can launch it. Which is why I got it in the first place. Tie down the bow if you are concerned. I hate ratchet straps, saw boats wrecked by them in the fiberglass touring days and I've also seen them deform plastic boats. Also, they usually have S hooks that can detach if the yak flexes too much.

I've only lost 2 yaks off a truck in 15 years and lots of miles. never due to strap failure though. Just strap the yak dwon so that you are pulling down to tighten, use the "big muscle of gravity"

This is exactly why I built this trailer. I think we all have had that lazy experience at some point. I also get lazy when I get home and not wanting to put everything away. Now I keep my kayak and all my gear in the trailer. In the morning all I have to do is take it out if the garage and hook it up to my truck. When I get home I just un hook the trailer with all the gear and throw it in the garage. I've only used it a handful of times and so far I'm really happy with it. If this is too big, harbor freight makes an even smaller trailer. Google "harbor freight kayak trailer" and you'll see there is lots of them out there.

Pretty sure one of those instances Sean mentioned was my Drifter.  Totally my fault.    I no longer use hook straps, and the Drifter survived unscathed, thanks to Sean's excellent driving skills and a perceptive driver following us.

I am hoping to get up there tomorrow with the lights my truck has a weird circular trailer light hook up that i have never used though, just waiting on my check to come through. are the bearings good enough to make it down here?

Sounds like the connector on your tow package is a 7 round, you can get an adapter for 4 flat (pretty common trailer termination) at HD for about 12 bucks.

I've used nothing but sport straps.as long as its pulled tight it should be fine.

Home Depot Trailer. Worked (sold it) GREAT!

I once had a Harbor Freight trailer I cut down to tow behind my ATV. I cut a little off each side before I assembled it. I cut the axle in the middle and then had a metal pipe welded to it to reinforce it. Of course you would need a longer tongue though.
